‘Monsters’ Scared Off the Box Office - Box Office Report for June 24

‘Monsters’ Scared Off the Box Office - Box Office Report for June 24

There is a clear winner for this weeks Box Office “scare off” (yeah, I’m not proud of myself for that one but it had to be done). But the other big film release this weekend wasn’t too far behind, but is it enough to propel World War Z to success? We’ll have to wait a couple more weekends to see about that.

#1 - Monsters University

Budget: N/A
Totals: $82 Million Domestic Opening Weekend / $54.5 Foreign Total / $136.5 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 1

As expected Monsters University has already brought in quite a haul, and I expect it will still have a pretty good weekend next weekend. And truth be told, it was not at all a bad film — certainly better than the previous two Pixar films. Some of us have been a little concerned about Pixar given the state of things, and they do seem to have sequelitis (this term applies to both sequels and prequels as far as I’m concerned). But if you’ve gotta do a prequel, this is the way to do it. I had a lot of fun despite the slow start to the film.

#2 - World War Z

Budget: $190 Million
Totals: $66 Million Domestic Opening Weekend / $45.8 Million Foreign Total / $111.8 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 1

I hear good things about this film, particularly, I hear that it is better than one might be predisposed to think. Friend of the site and contributor Cory Poff says it’s a great film. He’s writing the review, which he tells me is coming soon.

All in all, I suppose that’s a decent opening given that the film had to compete with a beloved studio/franchise film.

#3 - Man of Steel

Budget: $225 Million
Totals: $41.2 Million Weekend Gross / $188.3 Million Foreign Total / $398.3 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 2

Well so far this box office is shaping up about as I would expect. This is a strong second weekend for Man of Steel. You all already know how I feel about this film so I won’t continue to beat the dead horse. Let’s just say that while I could wish that better films were doing better I am not at all surprised.

#4 - This is the End

Budget: $32 Million
Totals: $13 Million Opening Weekend / $57.8 Million Total
Week Number: 2

The life of a guy like me who keeps an eye on movies and general cinema is fraught with peril. For instance, any hopes and dreams I had for humans as a species have been crushed and buried with the success of this film. Seriously, who likes this thing? Ugh.

#5 - Now You See Me

Budget: $75 Million
Totals: $7.9 Million Weekend Gross / $94.4 Million Domestic Total / $40 Million Foreign Total / $134.4 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 4

This film may have muscled it’s way over it’s budget in terms of it’s overall gross, but conventional number crunching and wisdom states that a film needs to make 2.5 times it’s production budget to really break even when you factor marketing, theater cuts, and everything else in — this is something I have only recently learned. Well, this film has a long way to go and I don’t think it’s going to get there. And unfortunately I thought it has some problems, though, sadly, I liked it better than Man of Steel.

#6 - Fast & Furious 6

Budget: $160 Million
Totals: $4.7 Million Weekend Gross / $228.4 Million Domestic Total / $417.3 Million Foreign Total / $645.7 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 5

You guys already know what I think about this film. It’s not good.

#7 - The Internship

Budget: $58 Million
Totals: $3.4 Million Weekend Gross / $38.3 Million Domestic Total / $5.1 Million Foreign Total / $43.4 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 3

I’ve heard this is better then it seems like from the trailers and stuff. I’m still skeptical.

#8 - The Purge

Budget: $3 Million
Totals: $3.4 Million Weekend Gross / $59.4 Million Domestic Total / $8.6 Million Foreign Total / $68 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 3

What on earth. Why? Wherefore? What in the world?

Other things worth noting. As I expected and predicted, Star Trek Into Darkness has sadly dropped off of the (admitedly arbitrary) top 8 threshold that I report on. It came in at number 9 this week for it’s 6th weekend out. It’s too bad because it’s certainly better than some of this other trash.

Iron Man 3 was number 10. Crazy how that thing just keeps on hanging on. Understandable since it was a great film though.
