Jon Stewart is Leaving ‘The Daily Show’

Jon Stewart is Leaving ‘The Daily Show’
Russ Fischer — /Film

The most trusted name in fake news is preparing to walk away from his desk. During the taping of tonight’s The Daily Show, host Jon Stewart told his studio audience that he will be leaving the show. Tweets from those who attended the taping first spread the word, and Comedy Central quickly followed with an official statement. Read that below.

This is disappointing, but not entirely a surprise. Stewart has been at this a long time.

I’m not being (very) facetious or satirical when I ask the question: where will be turn for real news and fearless reporting.

Oh, I know! I know! We’ll get our…

‘Jupiter Ascending’ Flops to ‘SpongeBob’ Success

‘Jupiter Ascending’ Flops to ‘SpongeBob’ Success
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water” opened to much larger than expected $56 million dollar haul this weekend, far beyond the expected $30 million folks predicted.

...

But the bigger headline belongs to “Jupiter Ascending.” With a price tag in the neighborhood of $175 million, the first whiff of trouble arrived last year whenWarner Bros. abruptly pushed the film from a scheduled summer slot, just weeks before it was due to be released. The line trotted out was that more time was needed on post-production, but it would seem the studio had good reason to be worried for the movie.…

‘Star Wars’ Supporting Actor Richard Bonehill Passes Away at Age 67

‘Star Wars’ Supporting Actor Richard Bonehill Passes Away at Age 67
Germain Lussier — /Film

He played not only a Stormtrooper, Rebel Soldier, TIE Pilot, a Tauntaun wrangler and more in the Star Wars films; he co-starred as Nien Nunb, co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon during the attack on the second Death Star.

Beyond that, the actor had roles or performed stunts in other films such as Flash Gordon, Highlander, Rob Roy and Doctor Who, among others. Bonehill was a master fencer, and it connections from that community announced the sad news Thursday that Richard Bonehill had passed away at the age of 67.

Well that is sad news indeed. And he certainly was prolific and will be missed.

We’re about to get a lot more “Christian” films

We’re about to get a lot more “Christian” films
Charles Bramesco — The Dissolve

Faith-based-film fever is sweeping some very specific parts of the nation. Recent years have seen a noticeable spike in films espousing old-school Christian dogma, and the public response has been undeniable. First, zombie-deity Christian horror film God’s Not Dead returned a $62 million box-office gross on a $2 million budget. (That was a joke; there are no zombies in God’s Not Dead, but a woman does develop cancerous tumors as a direct-ish consequence of writing anti-Duck Dynasty blog posts.)

Two things here:

  1. This sounds apocalyptic to me. Is this the end of the world? Christians are…

A Tribute Video to Actors We Lost in 2014

A Tribute Video to Actors We Lost in 2014

We lose great actors every year because time marches on, people get old, accidents happen, tragedies are unavoidable. Some years we lose better actors than others. This tribute video highlights the actors we lost this past year. While I think it was an unfotunate mistake to play that sappy music throughout the entire tribute, even when music from the hightlighted video clashes, the video does serve to remind us of those actors that we lost.

Final Trailer for ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies’

Final Trailer for ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies’

Peter Jackson is a great example of a talented filmmaker given to much excess who needs to be reigned in. But right now, he’s king of the hill and he can do whatever the heck he wants. And so he is. One book has become three films — and who knows where on earth this final film is going. Strange places, that’s for sure.

The first two installments of this trilogy have had wildly inconsistent visual styling and CGI work, and if this trailer is any indication, the trend of shoddy CGI, overly clean and high flash value but little substance visuals will continue. It’s quite disappointing, really.…

Of course, “My Little Pony” has seen another rise in pop culture thanks to bronies—aka adult dudes  and teens—who have fallen in love with the series “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.” It’ll be interesting to see what mix of elements Hasbro lands on to court the young girls they want to buy…
