Prometheus — Review

3 of 5 stars
Prometheus

Ridley Scott. He gave us Blade Runner and he gave us Alien: two classics that still rank among the best that science fiction has to offer. Prometheus sees him returning to the genre — and while I’d love to call it a glorious return, I can’t. Scott’s latest work is tense and it’s entertaining, but it’s also something of a disappointment.

Where No Man Has Gone Before

In the year 2089, archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) find pre-historic drawings on the walls of a cave in Scotland — drawings that match other drawings found on other…

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) — Review

Thanks again to Corey for submitting another reader contributed review. If he’s not careful he’s going to become a regular contributor. We welcome the interaction and collaboration, and I’m pretty sure I need to see this film now. Enjoy.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

“You’re too old to be filling your head with such nonsense,” Carmen tells her daughter, Ofelia, in an early scene in Pan’s Labyrinth. “Such nonsense” is a book of fairy tales, cradled lovingly in Ofelia’s hands.

But are fairy tales nonsense? Should they be read only by the very young? Or can grown-ups learn from them, too?

For Guillermo de Toro, the answers are clearly No, No, and Yes, respectively. Pan’s Labyrinth is an R-rated tale full of fauns, faeries, and other fantastical creatures. It’s bloody and it’s dark. But it also has much to say.

‘Looper’ (2012) — Review

5 of 5 stars

Welcome to our first reader contributed review. Corey has been excited about Looper ever since I’ve seen him talking online about it. He has shown great enthusiasm for the upcoming film and so Joseph asked him if he would be interested in contributing a review. He said he would love to.

Corey was a big fan of Movieology, from which MovieByte has spun off, and has been very supportive of MovieByte from the get-go. Corey loves books, movies, music, theology, science fiction and more. Exploring the endless possibilities of the English language is one of his favorite pastimes as an aspiring writer. He’s the type of guy who will sit down and read a grammar book from cover to cover (yes, this might just be a little crazy), and enjoy every minute of it. He blogs regularly at www.inkslingerblog.wordpress.com.

‘Looper’ (2012)

“I can see you’re not joking when you say you’re gonna kill this guy.”

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a time travel yarn that was actually worth its salt. With Looper, we finally get one… and it’s not just good, it’s fantastic!

Futuristic Storytelling

In the year 2042, time travel hasn’t yet been invented… but in 2072, it has. It’s also been outlawed. It’s so illegal, in fact, that only the mob uses it. When they want to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where he’s promptly offed by a “looper” with a blunderbuss. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is one such…
