Box Office Report for July 22, 2013

Box Office Report for July 22, 2013

Well, well, I was hoping to avoid writing about The Conjuring because I simply have no interest in this film whatsoever. But it’s my duty now to at least let you know that it has topped the box office charts over the weekend. I don’t know, it just doesn’t look at all good to me. But the people have spoken, and apparently they were willing to throw their money behind it this weekend.

#1 — The Conjuring

Budget: $20 Million (Can’t fault them for overspending I guess)
Totals: $41.5 Million Weekend Gross / $3.4 Million Foreign Total / $44.9 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 1

Look, I don’t understand the draw. I’ve seen the trailers. Not interested. And I really don’t have a lot more than that to say. Get in the comments and convince me otherwise people!

#2 — Despicable Me 2

Budget: $76 Million
Totals: $25 Million Weekend Gross / $276.1 Million Domestic Total / $308.4 Million Foreign Total / $584.5 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 3

Pushed out of its top spot, I’d still call that a pretty good haul over the weekend for Gru’s third weekend out. Still, even though I enjoyed the film, I find it frustrating that it’s beating better films (in my opinion). I don’t quite understand the staying power of this film.

#3 — Turbo

Budget: $76 Million
Totals: $21.5 Million Weekend Gross / $31.2 Million Total
Week Number: 1

I don’t think this is the strong opening Dreamworks had in mind when they spent $135 Million to make this film. I’ve heard from some friends that the film is pretty good, which surprises me since it looked fairly terrible to my eyes from the trailers. Not to mention, Dreamworks doesn’t always hit it out of the park. I don’t think this film is going to go on to success in the coming weeks. I expect it will drop quickly. I’ll know more when I’ve seen it, but I suspect a mixture of lackluster filmmaking/story, and family animated film fatigue at the box office may be playing a part here.

#4 — Grown Ups 2

Budget: $80 Million
Totals: $20 Million Weekend Gross / $79.5 Million Domestic Total / $8.7 Million Foreign Total / $88.2 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 2

Really guys? This looked so bad. Why did you all go see this one? I have no idea why I, or anyone else, would want to watch it. There are far, far better movies at the box office right now. What’s really surprising though, is that it’s ahead of Pacific Rim. Whereas in the case of Despicable Me 2 I think I at least understand it, in this case I think it’s just shameful.

#5 — RED 2

Budget: $84 Million
Totals: $18.5 Million Weekend Gross / $7.6 Million Foreign Total / $26.1 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 1

People! I am disappoint! This is easily the best new film at the box office this past weekend. I loved it! It was goofy, silly, heartfelt, it had action, romance, drama… it was just a doggone good film. What more did you all want? I don’t get it. But, I think we’re looking at a flop unless we can spread the word and turn this thing around this weekend! Tell your friends. this is a great film and the critics panning it are stupid!

#6 — Pacific Rim

Budget: $190 Million
Totals: $15.9 Million Weekend Gross / $68.2 Million Domestic Total / $110.3 Million Foreign Total / $178.5 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 2

Not good. Still hasn’t made it’s production budget back, and domestic performance is really lackluster. It’s too bad since it was a pretty decent film. I think the terrible early marketing really hurt this film.

#7 — R.I.P.D.

Budget: $130 Million
Totals: $12.7 Million Opening Weekend Gross / $6.8 Million Foreign Total / $19.5 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 1

Mayday, mayday! This ship is going down! It’s too bad, too, because I’ve been looking forward to this film. I’m going to see it early this week so I can be prepared to talk about it on The MovieByte Podcast.

#8 — The Heat

Budget: $43 Million
Totals: $9.3 Million Weekend Gross / $130 Million Domestic Total / $15.9 Million Foreign Total / $145.1 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 4

The Heat may have it’s flaws, but those numbers are probably working for the studio. In any event, there was some good and some fun in the film. It just dipped over the top a couple times too many for my taste.

Of note: World War Z comes in 9th with $456.4 Million, so it looks like it’s going to fall shy of that coveted $500 Million threshold.

Monsters University is next at #10, it is now over $500 Million.

The Lone Ranger is going down bad int eh #11 spot and has made just over half of it’s production budget back. Flop!

White House Down has also flopped at #12 with just $92.3 Million.

The Box Office has been brutal to several good films this year so far.
