I have quite the bag of mixed feelings when it comes to modern trailers. In same ways I think they tend to be formulaic in our modern time. But in other ways, I watch some of those older trailers and remember how awful they were. It was really quite terrible.

Ridley Scott is one of the most powerful directors working in Hollywood. (If he can get The Counselor made, he can do anything.) Following The Counselor, Scott turned to the story of Exodus, and cast a predominantly white cast for the film Exodus: Gods and Kings. Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II is played by Joel Egerton, who among the least-Egyptian actor working right now. An outcry resulted in part because the “gods and kings” of the title are all white, while the slaves in the film are black. Well, they did it again. No, it’s not their best trailer ever, but as usual it’s a lot of fun and makes a lot of uncomfortably good points. I still love the film a lot, but doggone, it’s easy to make fun of.

TJ and Joe didn’t get to watch the movie they wanted to watch because it was in limited release, so they watched ‘Birdman’ instead. And they are glad they did. What is film? More specifically, what do films, or the folks who make them, want to accomplish with their film? The answer to this question can be different for every film and every filmmaker out there. But I believe we could find on a very broad overview, that 99% of all films every made intend to tell you a story, and entertain you while doing it. No matter the genre, no matter the subject, no matter true story or fictional, filmmakers want you to be enthralled and engaged and to enjoy the great telling of a good story. Many are calling this latest trailer for Exodus: Gods and Kings “epic.” While I understand what they mean, I have to say that this trailer would not get my attention like the last one did. This trailer seesm to focus on the action and the heart pounding. The previous theatrical trailer has much more balance and nuance and things that I was interested in. But that’s not what’s going to seel people on this film, and Ridley Scott and the rest of the team know that. So they’ve given us this trailer.

The film opens in theaters on December 12.
