‘Jack Ryan’ Reboot Late 2013 Release

‘Jack Ryan’ Reboot Late 2013 Release
Slash Film

After a couple years of trying to get the film together, Paramount finally has a loose release window for Jack Ryan, the latest film to adapt the character from Tom Clancy novels such as The Hunt For Red October and Patriot Games, and the first to feature Chris Pine as a younger version of the character. (He’s the fourth actor to play Ryan, following Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck.) The studio waited to move forward until Pine was done with the Star Trek sequel, and will be able to get the new Ryan movie shooting soon.

Can’t wait to see how this goes.

48 FPS Won’t Cost More

48 FPS Won’t Cost More
Slash Film

When it comes to premium services, moviegoers are used to paying a little more. Almost all theaters charge more for films that are in IMAX, 3D or feature assigned seating and a lack of commercials. So when Peter Jackson announced that The Hobbit would be shot and distributed in 48 frames per second, the first films ever to do so, most assumed the higher frame rate would result in an increased ticket price. Variety now reports that won’t be the case. When The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters this December 14, a 3D ticket to see it in 48 frames per second will cost the same as a…

Speaking of Inflated Film Budgets

Speaking of Inflated Film Budgets
Movie Line

Rumors are flying that Johnny Depp is considering a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean installment, and the speculation may be overheating. Some international papers including The Sun say the newly single star could make some rather unprecedented cha-ching — to the tune of £60 million (that’s about $95 million at current exchange rates). That would be some crazy treasure even the likes of, well, a pirate, could only dream of… But is the super-star actor worth the stupid money even if the rumors were only say, mostly true?

Yeah, I think Abrams was on to something. Still, it’s hard to argue…

Renewed?

Renewed?
Gigaom

New Jersey-based iOS app developer Andrew Fernandez just published the V2.0 of his social TV app Renewed, which takes on other apps in this space with an interesting twist. Renewed says it knows which shows are going to get canceled, and which ones will get picked up for another season, simply based on the data it gathers from check-ins.

The app displays a health meter for each and every show. These predictions may be based on a small user base for now, but Fernandez told me that he has bigger plans for this kind of data. “My big goal for the data is to make it available to networks and…

Hollywood Actually Encourages Piracy

Hollywood Actually Encourages Piracy
Scientific America

Streaming movies offers instant gratification: no waiting, no driving—plus great portability: you can watch on gadgets too small for a DVD drive, like phones, tablets and superthin laptops.

Hollywood movie studios should benefit, too. The easier it is to rent a movie, the more people will do it. And the more folks rent, the more money the studios make.

Well, apparently, none of that has occurred to the movie industry. It seems intent on leaving money on the table.

And if you don’t make your product available legally, guess what? The people will get it illegally. Traffic to…

‘How it Should Have Ended’ Batman Style

‘How it Should Have Ended’ Batman Style

If there are plot holes in a film, the folks over at How It Should Have Ended will find them and hillarity will ensue. While I liked The Dark Knight Rises, I acknowlege fully that there were a few plot holes and How It Should Have Ended have stepped up to their duty willingly.

How It Should Have Ended highlights a few of the more gaping flaws that would have made for a much shorter film if corrected. There is way more awesome here than anyone should have a right to view in one single day. View at your own risk…

Also, this ‘making of’ was pretty fun.

Brave New Hair

Brave New Hair
fxguide

For Brave, the team at Pixar had to deal with a hero or rather heroine, who is on screen for almost every shot, but who needed wild, yet beautiful hair. The simulation department needed to develop a technique and approach not only viable on a hand crafted trailer shot, but something that could be used almost ‘out of box’ on most shots, or the film was simply never going to make its deadline.

Warning: this article contains plot spoilers.

The Princess Merida’s hair was almost a three year process to get correct. Earlier hair such as for the characters in The Incredibles had much more…

‘The Impossible’ Staring Ewan McGregor

‘The Impossible’ Staring Ewan McGregor
Entertainment Weekly

The new trailer for Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor’s upcoming tsunami drama The Impossible shows literally the calm before the storm, and then the horrific storm itself.

Classical music plays over flashes of serene waves, scuba diving, kids frolicking on a perfect, bright beach in Thailand and pensive, loving looks between Watts as Maria and her husband Henry, played by McGregor, at dinner.

Then all hell breaks loose.

Check out the trailer from Summit Entertainment below.

This could be interesting. Ewan McGregor is always great, even in less than stellar films (*cough* Star Wars…

Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln

Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln
Screen Invasion

“I’ll… free… your… slaves! I’LL FREE THEM ALL!” Okay, we probably shouldn’t expect the eccentric genius of Daniel Day-Lewis’ Oscar winning role in There Will Be Blood, but the acclaimed actor is certain to light to screen this Christmas in Steven Spielberg’s biopic Lincoln. Below is the first official still from the film, and no it doesn’t show him slaying vampires. On a side note, it was also reported today that Day-Lewis never once stepped out of character while on the film’s set. Whether he spent most of that time bemused by the modern technology has not yet been confirmed.

First of…
