This Isn’t About Johnny Depp

“Oompa Loompa, do-ba-dee-doo” In this week’s episode TJ and Joseph discuss films from TJ’s Box Office Overview Article - ‘The Hunger Games’ and it’s critique of modern culture, ‘The Avengers’ and Joss Whedon, ‘Brave’ and where Pixar veered off track, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and its great box office success yet still overshadowed by ‘The Avengers’, and the box office failures of ‘Total Recall’ and ‘The Bourne Legacy’. And they also discuss Mel Stuart’s ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ as well as a little discussion of the newer Tim Burton remake, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ (spoiler, Joseph and TJ thought it was a horrible film).

Box Office Overview as of August 21

We still have a few more films to go this year, but I thought it would be interesting to take a few moments to compare the box office results of the films so far that I care about (in other words, I’m not going to talk about ParaNorman, just for instance) and talk a little bit about the results. There’s a couple of films here that came out before we launched MovieByte so I want to talk about them a little bit anyway.

The films I’ll talk about are, in order of release date, The Hunger Games, The Avengers, Brave, The Dark Knight Rises, Total Recall, and The Bourne Legacy.

Atheists Define Their Worship Center: The Cinema

Atheists Define Their Worship Center: The Cinema
RNS

There were no red carpets, no paparazzi, no celebrities and definitely no God at the recent annual Atheist Film Festival.

Instead, there were more than a dozen films, long and short, about separation of church and state, freedom of religion (and no religion), the conflict between science and religion in public schools and a couple hundred people eager to see them.

“If we don’t do this, who will? said festival organizer Dave Fitzgerald, as people picked up atheist-themed books and T-shirts at the Aug. 10–11 festival. “Atheists are not well-represented by Hollywood, and a lot of people…

Captain America Casting

Captain America Casting
Slashfilm.com

Movie superheroes tend to be faithful boyfriends, sticking with a single love interest for the entire duration of their franchise, or at least a couple of installments. But alas, the specific circumstances surrounding Captain America’s romance with Peggy Carter (i.e., the whole “being frozen in a block of ice for six decades” thing) make it impossible for the pair to reunite in proper fashion.

So the search is now underway for a new lady to star in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and directors Joe and Anthony Russo have reportedly whittled down the options to three excellent…

‘Avengers’ Blooper Reel and Extended Scene

‘Avengers’ Blooper Reel and Extended Scene
Slashfilm.com

The Avengers won’t hit DVD and Blu-ray until late September but some of the special features are beginning to pop up online, including a must-see 4-minute long blooper/gag reel. After the jump you’ll also find a two minute extended scene between Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) preparing and planning. While you can definitely see why this scene was shortened, its interesting to see the conversation that was lost on the editing room floor.

The blooper reel is not embedable here, so be sure to click through for that. The extended scene is… Read The Rest

Hunger Games Home Video Release

Hunger Games Home Video Release
Entertainment Weekly

The only segments really worth tuning into are a longer version of the movie’s clever propaganda film-within-a-film and an all too brief featurette called “Preparing for the Games: A Director’s Process.” In that chapter, Ross walks us through a couple of scenes from the movie, splitting the screen into three parts. He simultaneously shows us the shooting script, the cool storyboards, and what we ended up seeing in theaters. It’s fascinating stuff for film nerds, offering a real sense of the nuts and bolts of how movies get made. Sadly, it’s only on the Blu-ray version and it’s only three…

Fringe Season 5 Trailer

Fringe Season 5 Trailer
TVline.com

SEASON 5 SNEAK PEEK | A trailer approved for “all members of the resistance” (watch it below) showcased some new footage – even though the series hasn’t officially started production yet. (How? The cast took time out to film some scenes for the reel, including touching moments between Peter and Olivia.) “[Etta]‘s everything I ever hoped she’d become,” said Olivia, to which Peter replied, “Just like her mother,” before deciding to fight back against the Observers by creating some of their own fringe events. Meanwhile, Walter declares, “I know how to rid our world of the Observers!” and “We…

When the Fox thriller returns on Sept. 28, the action picks up the day after Season 4′s 2036-set “Letters in Transit” episode left off — with an Olivia-less Fringe crew joining the war against the Observers.

The following exclusive teaser shows the invaders marching toward the screen as a series of voiceovers recount the team’s gradual understanding of the chrome domed enigmas.

I am really looking forward to this final season of Fringe. I’ve followed the show from the beginning and I’ve loved every minute of it. Very few missteps and very minor quibbles. I’m a little sad that this is…

Abrams on Big Budgets

Abrams on Big Budgets
Los Angeles Times

“It is preposterous and embarrassing that movies cost what they do.”

...

“I am as interested in and obsessed with what can be done in the feature world for a price as anyone at any studio,” said Abrams, who’s looking to expand Bad Robot’s slate in the coming years. “I feel like it is incumbent upon filmmakers today to treat it like their own money.”

I first became interested in this subject when reading (wait for it, this is really geeky, but since we’re already talking about Star Trek anyway…), “I Am Spock.” In it, Mr. Nimoy talks about the troubles that plagued the big budgeted…
