‘Trek’ Fans Hate ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’?

‘Trek’ Fans Hate ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’?
Graeme McMillan - The Hollywood Reporter

According to Faraci, “Star Trek Into Darkness was met with boos when it was mentioned, and one guy took the mic to say these reboots shouldn’t even be considered for a list of Star Trek movies.” Into Darkness was met with hardcore fan apathy when released in May—although both fans and mainstream audiences seemed to enjoy it —but that it’s unpopular to the point of booing (or being named the least popular movie in the series, for that matter) may be something that Paramount and executive producers/writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman might want to take into account before planning the third…

RUMOR! Ian McDiarmid to Reprise Palpatine in Episode VII?

RUMOR! Ian McDiarmid to Reprise Palpatine in Episode VII?
Jesse Giroux - JoBlo

Jedi News is claiming that a source has told them that Ian McDiarmid will be back as Emperor Palpatine in the new film:

(Do I really need to put a spoiler tag for events from the original STAR WARS trilogy? Well just in case, this is your warning. There’s also details about the STAR WARS expanded universe, so you might want to avoid that too.)

The specifics of the role are unclear, but it seems likely that McDiarmid will be returning to his signature role of Palpatine. Whether as the original or a clone of, we are yet to discern.

I’m not that familiar with the expanded universe for STAR…

Paul Ruebens Says Director Chosen for ‘Pee-Wee Herman’ Movie

Paul Ruebens Says Director Chosen for ‘Pee-Wee Herman’ Movie
Russ Fischer - /Film

We’ve heard Paul Ruebens talk about a new Pee-Wee Herman movie for years. There’s long been a script that he’s been writing and rewriting (with Paul Rust) under the watchful eye of producer Judd Apatow. But it’s been quite a while since we’ve heard anything real — years, in fact. With Ruebens doing press for The Smurfs 2, however, the actor is saying that Pee-Wee should be back in force in 2014.

Speaking to the LA Times, Reubens confided that a director has been chosen for the new Pee-Wee movie and that the script and financing are in place.
Remember me talking in an earlier post today…

RUMOR: John M. Chu to Direct Next ‘Star Trek’ Film?

RUMOR: John M. Chu to Direct Next ‘Star Trek’ Film?
Kevin Jagernauth - The Playlist

The dudes over at Latino Review are reporting that Jon M. Chu, the man behind “G.I. Retaliation,” is a “contender” to direct the third installment in the “Star Trek” films for a 2016 release. This is all well and good, except for the fact that he’s committed right now to some other big franchises. Most notably, it was just under a couple of months ago that Paramount tagged him to helm “G.I. Joe 3”— which we presume is a series they don’t want sitting around too long— while he’s also got “Masters Of The Universe” brewing at Sony. So we’d reckon he’s a guy they like a lot at the moment, though…

Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin Being Considered for Batman

Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin Being Considered for Batman
Kevin Jagernauth - The Playlist

As we heard at the end of last week, rumors suggest that Warner Bros. is looking for an older Batman, a grizzled version of the character in their 40s and for the most part (something we suggested would be a good idea too), the names put forth by THR as early contenders mostly bear that out. Ryan Gosling and Matthew Goode are the two youngest at 32 and 35, respectively, but they are both folks the studio has been keen on previously. Gosling was previously attached to WB’s long brewing “Logan’s Run” reboot (his buddy Nicolas Winding Refn is still on board), and his directorial debut “How To…

Bourne Again — More Bourne without, you know, Bourne

Bourne Again — More Bourne without, you know, Bourne
Kevin Jagernauth - The Playlist

Get out the chems, and get ready to run as Jason Bourne Aaron Cross is getting ready to kick some more ass. While the side-quel/spin-off “The Bourne Legacy” did solid if not exactly spectacular business (it’s the lowest grosser in the franchise, but also did about the same numbers as Matt Damon‘s first time at bat in the series), it was enough forUniversal to start considering a fifth film. In fact, not long after it hit theaters the studio confirmed a sequel was in the works, and earlier this year it was said they were “actively working” on it. And today comes more firm word.

James Cameron Ups ‘Avatar’ Sequel Count to Three

James Cameron Ups ‘Avatar’ Sequel Count to Three
Mike Fleming, Jr. - Deadline Hollywood

The planned two sequels to James Cameron’s highly successful 2009 film Avatar have now become three sequels, announces Deadline Hollywood. The three sequels will be shot at the same time, with Avatar 2 set for release in December 2016.

Commented Cameron: “Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that Avatar’s world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen.…

‘Despicable Me 2’ is Universal’s Most Profitable Film

‘Despicable Me 2’ is Universal’s Most Profitable Film
David Lieberman - Deadline

NBCUniversal chief Steve Burke made his observations this morning in Comcast‘s Q2 conference call with analysts as he discussed his company’s approach to films following its new production and finance partnership with Legendary Entertainment. Burke noted that NBCU is delighted with its animation alliance with Illumination. The partners’ Despicable Me 2 will become “the single most profitable film in the 100 year history of Universal Studios.”

That’s just sad. What is the world coming to?

‘Sharknado’ Coming to Theaters

‘Sharknado’ Coming to Theaters
Margaret Lyons - Vulture

Not that many people actually watched Internet touchstone Sharknado, even from the presumable comforts of their own homes, but Regal Cinemas is hoping a tsunami of irony will carry people to its theaters for a midnight screening of the Syfy movie on Friday, August 2. If you thought those “special” effects looked crummy on your television, just imagine how they’ll look on a movie screen! (Like they were made in Claris Works? Just guessing.)

I think I just threw up…

Arnold Schwarzenegger to Make 3 More Conan Films

Arnold Schwarzenegger to Make 3 More Conan Films
George Wales - TotalFilm

Arnold Schwarzenegger has previously mentioned that a new Conan The Barbarian movie is on his agenda, but apparently, that film might be the first of three.

That’s according to Fredrik Malmberg, CEO of Paradox Entertainment, the current holders of the rights to the Conan franchise…

“We have a great story,” says Malmberg. “Everyone loves it. This is a role that’s perfect for [Arnold] and he’s very involved with the whole Universal team. It’s the best team they have. Arnold has been very instrumental to bringing this together saying, ‘We gotta make a good Conan!’”

“I think if we do this…
