‘Oz’ clip from Rachel Weisz on Jimmy Kimmel

‘Oz’ clip from Rachel Weisz on Jimmy Kimmel

I’m looking forward to see if this film is any good. My counterpart here at MovieByte, Joe, does not think it will be any good. I’m a bit more optimistic.

Jimmy Kimmel got an interview with Rachel Weisz, who plays Evanora — a bad witch. And he got to show a clip of Evanora talking to an apparently undecided witch (of whether she’s good or bad), Theodora played by Mila Kunis. I find it interesting, no doubt Joe would say it looks silly. Time will tell.

Box Office Report as of Feb 19

Box Office Report as of Feb 19
The Playlist

Welcome to the world of the new blockbuster. Would Hollywood studios learn to make good movies, or make smarter fiscal decisions first? Given that we’re looking at “A Good Day To Die Hard” ruling over the box office, the latter is true, with the fifth installment in the action series winning a very close horse race on this Presidents’ Day weekend. The fact that this opening is significantly smaller than the one for “Live Free Or Die Hard” and that the picture is assuredly the worst in the series turns out to be irrelevant.

It’s a sad tale, but someone has to tell it. Yes a horrible film…

‘House of Cards’ as ‘Shakespeare’

‘House of Cards’ as ‘Shakespeare’
Book View Café

Warning! Spoilers for House of Cards.

Say what you will about Netflix’s new model for serving up an entire season in one fell swoop, it works for me. I watched the series over the weekend and sticking with it for the duration helped me discover its Shakespearian side. The only question is: which Shakespeare?

At first it’s Macbeth with Frank “Thane of Cawdor” Underwood conducting nefarious acts of treason. In this version, there are no ugly sisters bearing the news of the thane’s forthcoming triumph. In fact his hopes are dashed in the very first scene. Nevertheless the shadow operation…

‘Olympus Has Fallen’ Featurette

‘Olympus Has Fallen’ Featurette

I have made it no secret that I think the upcoming film Olympus Has Fallen is going to be a good one. It’s hard to tell about these things sometimes, and I could be wrong, but I don’t think so. And for once, Joe and I agree that this is probably going to be a good one. That doesn’t happen often so, saddle up!

We have here a nifty featurette with a very few things we haven’t seen yet, and some actor interviews. Check it out:

Olympus Has Fallen Is set to open on March 22nd and you can be sure I’ll have myself firmly planted in a theater seat on opening night. Should be fun!

‘The Hunger Games’ Script News

‘The Hunger Games’ Script News
/Film

Emmy-award winning screenwriter Danny Strong, recently in the news due to the success of HBO’s Game Changewas hired to write The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 back in October. His deal had an option for him to write the second part if Lionsgate liked his first script. Well he’s done, they like it, and he’s now working on Part 2.

With Catching Fire coming out later this year, and part one of Mocking Jay coming out in 2014 with part 2 right on it’s heels in 2015, it’s little wonder they are pushing the scripts through quickly.

I’m excited to see the upcoming films. As an overall fan…

Ewan McGregor/Obi-Wan Standalone Film?

Ewan McGregor/Obi-Wan Standalone Film?
Movieline.com

Now that Ewan McGregor has voiced his enthusiasm for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi again, Disney should make it so. The actor, who’s out promoting Jack The Giant Slayer told MTV News that he thought reprising his role as the Jedi Master was “a good idea” and had clearly done some thinking about where an Obi-Wan standalone movie could fit into the about-to-be-rebooted Star Wars franchise

Call me cray cray, but I would actually go see this film. One of the (very few) redeeming qualities of the Star Wars prequels was Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. He was a true beacon of light in a very, very dark…

‘Monsters University’ - A Message from the Dean

‘Monsters University’ - A Message from the Dean

We’ve known about the website for Monsters University for some time. It’s pretty awesome and great marketing. I really, really love this indirect form of marketing. We’ve seen similar things with other Pixar films (such as Toy Story 3 with the Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear Commerical and the like).

This is exactly the sort of thing we have here in a promo video for Monsters Universty called, “A Message from the Dean.” The funny thing is I’ve made promos very much in this same genre and spirit for real colleges so this is just too funny!

Blowing Up Jar Jar

Blowing Up Jar Jar

It was a week for trailers, featurettes, and clips. This week, we wrap up with the new trailer, featurette and a clip from John Goodman of the upcoming ‘Monsters University’, ‘The Host’ featurette and trailer, a new trailer and clip for ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ and some thoughts on Bryan Singer directing that film, a release date for the ‘Les Miserables’ Blu-ray — you’ll want to add this one to your library, Movieology Episode #3 in which Eric and Michael talk about ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, TJ’s review of ‘Identity Thief’ which he did not like at all and recommends you stay away from, Jar Jar Binks getting what he deserves in LEGO form as well as other fun LEGO stuff, a new 15 year anniversary cover for ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’, TJ’s review of ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ which was a not a good film, and what you may want to see or avoid this weekend at the box office.

What to see: Weekend of Feb 15, 2013

This is the Box Office Doldrums people. There’s not a lot to see, and the one film I thought might be worth seeing is total garbage. Let’s see if we can figure out something for you to see this weekend.

New in Theaters

Beautiful Creatures - PG-13
I could see this one going either way. I don’t know when I will get a chance to watch it, but I will try to do so before next weekend so I can give a report.

A supernatural love story set in the South which tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers: Ethan, a young man longing to escape his small town, and Lena, a mysterious new girl.…
