6. Why is it essential for a looper to close his own loop?

This is another one of those questions Johnson had answered in his head but didn’t put in the movie. In fact, he even conceived a scene with Abe addressing it but never shot it.

“People in the future, all they know about time travel is to be afraid of it. So they’re trying to keep it as tight as possible. So the initial reason they set it up this way was to keep the causality loop as tight as possible,” Johnson said. Because, for example, if someone else kills your older self and you have to exist with your own murderer for 30…

‘Looper’ (2012) — Review

5 of 5 stars

Welcome to our first reader contributed review. Corey has been excited about Looper ever since I’ve seen him talking online about it. He has shown great enthusiasm for the upcoming film and so Joseph asked him if he would be interested in contributing a review. He said he would love to.

Corey was a big fan of Movieology, from which MovieByte has spun off, and has been very supportive of MovieByte from the get-go. Corey loves books, movies, music, theology, science fiction and more. Exploring the endless possibilities of the English language is one of his favorite pastimes as an aspiring writer. He’s the type of guy who will sit down and read a grammar book from cover to cover (yes, this might just be a little crazy), and enjoy every minute of it. He blogs regularly at www.inkslingerblog.wordpress.com.

‘Looper’ (2012)

“I can see you’re not joking when you say you’re gonna kill this guy.”

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a time travel yarn that was actually worth its salt. With Looper, we finally get one… and it’s not just good, it’s fantastic!

Futuristic Storytelling

In the year 2042, time travel hasn’t yet been invented… but in 2072, it has. It’s also been outlawed. It’s so illegal, in fact, that only the mob uses it. When they want to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where he’s promptly offed by a “looper” with a blunderbuss. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is one such…

The Master — Review

3.5 of 5 stars
The Master

Smart, powerfully acted, beautifully filmed, and solidly engrossing, The Master extends writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s winning streak of challenging films for serious audiences.

This striking portrait of drifters and seekers in post World War II America, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master unfolds the journey of a Naval veteran (Joaquin Phoenix) who arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future — until he is tantalized by The Cause and its charismatic leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman).

Story line

Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is a mentally disturbed man that has…

Today we have 18 new high resolution photos from director Rian Johnson‘s latest science-fiction thriller movie Looper, starring Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, Piper Perabo, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels.

In the film, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “Looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,”…

E.T. Phones… Uh, Theaters Actually

E.T. Phones… Uh, Theaters Actually
Movie Line

In honor of its 30th anniversary (and to promote the upcoming Blu-ray release, ka-ching!), Steven Spielberg’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial will return to theaters in October for a one-night only special engagement in October, via Fathom Events. As a bonus, the digitally-remastered film will be accompanied by making-of materials and a remembrance by Drew Barrymore — Gertie! — and, probably, buckets full of Reese’s Pieces.

I’m not a fan of this film. In fact I can’t stand it. But It seems like I should let you good folks know about it in case you want to see this wretched film in theaters.…

I’ll leave the jokes about how Monsters, Inc 3D has a new eye-popping look to Billy Crystal and, instead, ask if you remember where your head was at in November 2001 when this Pixar classic was released. If you lived in New York City and had a young child (as I did), you were probably extremely grateful  for Monsters, Inc. because, even if your kid was too young to grasp what had happened at Ground Zero, you were not.Sitting in the cool dark of a movie theater  with my four-year-old and watching this funny film was a brief, welcome respite from the daily barrage of news reports about…

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Becomes Billionaire
Box Office Mojo

Thanks to a massive opening in China, The Dark Knight Rises is now the 13th movie ever to reach $1 billion worldwide. Including Monday domestic grosses, The Dark Knight Rises has now made over $1.01 billion, which means sometime this weekend it passed The Dark Knight ($1.003 billion) to become the highest-grossing Batman movie ever.

The Batman series joins Pirates of the Caribbean as the only franchises with two $1 billion movies. The Dark Knight Rises is also now the second movie (after Avatar) to reach $100 million in worldwide IMAX grosses.

Those are some impressive… Read The Rest

‘Avengers’ Back In Theaters

‘Avengers’ Back In Theaters

So with a weak set of films opening wide this weekend, Disney has decided to re-release Joss Whedon‘s superhero epic for one week only, August 31 through September 6. The goal? Fill the weekend’s distinct lack of wide releases skewed to young men, and maybe make a run at James Cameron’s number two box-office record.

I’m sorely tempted to go see it again.

But under the direction of David Koepp (“Secret Window,” the screenplays for “Mission: Impossible” and “Spider-Man”), this is an expert and spellbinding adventure. I’m very weary of routine chase movies. There’s nothing routine about “Premium Rush.” Any action formula can be brought to life with enough imagination and energy.

Well, Ebert like it, maybe I should go see it. I’ll see if I can make time.
