Limited 48fps Released for ‘The Hobbit’
Slashfilm

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was shot at 48 frames per second, rather than the film industry standard 24fps. The first public presentation of footage, at CinemaCon this past spring, didn’t go so well, with audiences finding that the increased detail seen in the HFR footage made the film look cheap, rather than more impressive.

Huh. Who would have guessed there was a reason films have been shot at 24fps all these years?

WB will do a very limited release, “perhaps n[o]t even into all major cities,” to start getting audiences used to seeing HFR. There may be a wider rollout after…

‘The Hobbit’ Reworked Trailer

‘The Hobbit’ Reworked Trailer
Slash Film

This one follows more or less the same trajectory as the debut trailer, with a reintroduction to Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm, briefly, and Martin Freeman, primarily), Gandalf (Ian McKellen), and the world of Middle-Earth. But there is some new footage this time, just a bit, with a few shots cut into what we’ve already seen.

Even with my irritation with Peter Jackson on some things as I mentioned previously, it’s getting hard not to get excited about this film. Here’s the reworked trailer.

‘Bourne Legacy’ Director Interview

Gilroy’s latest project, “The Bourne Legacy,” has had a complicated journey to the screen. Damon’s character was popular but had already solved the central problem of the trilogy, which was finding his true identity. A fourth movie entered the murky territory of Internet rumors until Damon and the director Paul Greengrass disengaged themselves from the project. (Damon had some rather harsh words for Gilroy’s work that he shared in a “GQ” cover story that he later apologized for, and Gilroy is more or less mum on the matter.)

Other people were interested in making a fourth, though,…

There are few “hooks” in the movie-music world that are as grabby as the Bourne Identity Soundtrack riff (starts at 0:29). Like the movie series, its intensity commands attention. We just had to figure out a way to use it. In our usual style, we thought we’d create an “action movie soundtrack” that combined this and a piece of classical music. In the early 1700’s Antonio Vivaldi wrote a concerto for an instrument that was then largely “undiscovered” by the music world—the cello. Among the first cello solo pieces ever written, Vivaldi was gutsy enough to write it for not only one, but TWO…

‘Jack Ryan’

‘Jack Ryan’
Slash Film

Paramount’s Jack Ryan reboot has had its share of false starts, but the fact that it’s finally begun casting in earnest can only be a positive sign. Chris Pine‘s been attached to play the beloved Tom Clancy creation for years, but he’s been all alone in the spotlight.

That changed a few weeks ago when director Kenneth Branagh (who got the helming gig back in March) cast himself as the villain, and now he’s narrowing down the possibilities for the female lead role as well. On that short list are Keira Knightley, Felicity Jones, and Evangeline Lilly.

Somehow, I was unaware of this film…
