Video: Model Work, Matte Paintings, and Optical Printing in ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones’

Video: Model Work, Matte Paintings, and Optical Printing in ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones’

Man I love this stuff. I wish we did more practical effects work in today’s films. Can you imagine how good stuff would work with real models and today’s digial compositing technology? Call me a softie for some of the old technologies, but I really think sometimes the old model work looks better.

On the other hand, hearing them talk about how long and how much work some of these shots took is pretty amazing too and you can’t blame filmmakers to some extent for embracing the digital revolution.

Video of the Day: Phil Lord and Chris Miller Talk About Making ‘The LEGO Movie’ Realistic

Video of the Day: Phil Lord and Chris Miller Talk About Making ‘The LEGO Movie’ Realistic

It was obvious to me in the theater that love and attention to detail went into every single frame of The LEGO Movie. As if to prove that point, Warner Bros. has just released this 4 minute promo/interview with the pair (and some others) talking about how they made The LEGO Movie look real. I really love that they did all the CGI based on all real LEGO bricks. They put every brick into their virtual inventory and so every single thing you ever see on screen is from “real” LEGO bricks. That is pretty amazing to me. It was a bold stylistic choice and one that paid off so well. And the level of…

“Is it too late to change the name?” — The ‘Ant-Man’ Trailer

“Is it too late to change the name?” — The ‘Ant-Man’ Trailer

I don’t know what’s going on with Evangeline Lilly’s hair, but this rest of this trailer looks intriguing. Leave it to Marvel to bring up yet another franchise I know absolutely nothing about, but which looks totally cool. I know there was a lot of controversy over the director change and Edgar Wright being fired, but I still have some faith in Marvel to do this right.

The thing I find the most interesting about this trailer is the fact that this doesn’t feel like your average flash/bang super-hero trailer. Their really positioning the film as a character exploration — and that’s welcome as…

New ‘Peanuts’ Trailer

New ‘Peanuts’ Trailer

The job of any trailer is to get people excited for the film — or at the very least, to get them interested in the film. The first two teaser trailer succeeded in that. This one does too in a way, although it’s a little bit strange. They seem to be calling this the first full trailer, and yet it’s basically like the last teaser trailer. It’s all Snoopy flying his dog house around. I’m not complaining too much, though. Many modern trailers give way too much away over the course of the promotional run and leave little left to discover in the theater. Of all the films I doubt that would hurt,…

A Tribute Video to Actors We Lost in 2014

A Tribute Video to Actors We Lost in 2014

We lose great actors every year because time marches on, people get old, accidents happen, tragedies are unavoidable. Some years we lose better actors than others. This tribute video highlights the actors we lost this past year. While I think it was an unfotunate mistake to play that sappy music throughout the entire tribute, even when music from the hightlighted video clashes, the video does serve to remind us of those actors that we lost.

Next ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Trailer Coming January 12 (With Announcement Video)

Next ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Trailer Coming January 12 (With Announcement Video)

Welcome to 2015, film fans! Marvel is prepared to ring in our new year right with a new trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron. They will officially do so on January 12 — at least, that’s the idea. But we knew that the last time they tried to hold an Avengers trailer for an announced future release date, it got leaked. So we’ll see if they can keep it under lock and key this time.

Maybe they can satiate the people who would leak the trailer with this announcement clip (unlikely). Either way, Age of Ultron is one of the films I’m most looking forward to this year for many reasons — not the least…

9 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Home Alone’

9 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Home Alone’

I’m a little late running this now that it’s after Christmas — I had a lot of traveling and crazy scheduling, cut me some slack people! — but I enjoyed it and figured it’s still worth running. I re-watched Home Alone a few days ago so everything was fresh on my mind for this video, so that made it fun as well.

Honest Trailer: ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’

Honest Trailer: ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’

Well now, this really hits the spot. Despite the fact that the film wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected (probably because Michael Bay didn’t direct, but only produced), there were plot wholes wide enough to blow up a semi-truck in (and they did).

Visual Effects Reel from ILM for ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

Visual Effects Reel from ILM for ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

In my opinion, The Winter Soldier features some of the better visual effects and CGI we have seen. Why is this? Because during the film, you never once think about tihe effects or notice them — at least I did not. They never got in the way and they served the story.

This effects reel shows just how much CGI and work went into the film. Scenes I hadn’t fully thought of how much was involved. Whole shots composed of nothing but CGI and I never noticed. This is impressive, especially on the heels of The Hobbit series where I felt like the CGI was just a mess. It’s sad that it is too, because I…
