Earth to Echo — Review

Earth to Echo

I may not actually be the best person to write this review. I have known for a long time that I liked films and wanted to watch all of them and evaluate them. But before I was running MovieByte, it was more difficult to justify the expense. As a consequence, I have seen only one of the previous films that treads the ground that this film waltzes across a little haphazardly. That one film is E.T., which I remember hating from my childhood. Yes, yes, I know, you may all gasp in shock and horror at the atrocity I have just committed. And to be fair, I haven’t actually seen E.T. since well before…

‘Transformers 4’ Holds No. 1 Spot At Box Office

‘Transformers 4’ Holds No. 1 Spot At Box Office
Lindsey Bahr — Entertainment Weekly

Transformers: Age of Extinction showed its summer might once more by holding onto the No. 1 spot in its second weekend of release, grossing an estimated $36.4 million from 4,233 locations and effectively shutting out the slate of new releases. Michael Bay’s explosive epic also hit $400 million internationally after just 12 days in release.

There is no justice in the world. The best film to be released so far this year, Edge of Tomorrow, has only brought in $90.8 Million domestically and a worldwide total of $339.4 Million world wide. While that’s nothing to sneeze at, compared to the…

Henry Cavill in Gritty ‘Batman “Five” Superman’ Poster

Henry Cavill in Gritty ‘Batman “Five” Superman’ Poster

I like my superheroes the way I like my chocolate milk: dark and gritty… er, well, dark… actually I guess it’s more of a light brown.

Oh I don’t even know where I’m going with this. Whatever. But I can tell you that I’m totally more interested in Batman Five Superman now that we’ve got this dark and gritty Superman poster — only, whatever the opposite of more interested is. This film looks to me like it’s going to be every bit the disaster that Man of Steel was, or worse (if that’s possible).

Here’s your poster though, because I know it’s a big world and there are some of you who will be…

‘Pacific Rim 2’ Will Be “Very Different” Guillermo Del Toro Says

‘Pacific Rim 2’ Will Be “Very Different” Guillermo Del Toro Says
Michael Calia — The Wall Street Journal

Without spoiling anything, what can fans expect from “Pacific Rim 2″?

We are three years away, so to spoil anything would be fantastically silly of me. What I can tell you: [screenwriter Zak Penn] and I really went in, we started with [screenwriter Travis Beacham] about a year and a half ago, kicking ideas back and forth. And, admittedly, I said to Zak, let’s keep kicking ideas till we find one that really, really turns the first movie on its ear, so to speak. (…) It was hard to create a world that did not come from a comic book, that had its own mythology, so we had to sacrifice many…

What is Bayhem? Must Watch Video Essay

What is Bayhem? Must Watch Video Essay

So what exactly is Bayhem? It’s a question worth asking. The reasons for Bay’s success may be beyond you if you do not take the time to analyze what Bay is doing in his filmmaking. There is no doubt that when it comes to technique, Bay is (usually) in a master class with very, very few others. There are certainly directors that try to replicate “Bayhem”, but they almost always fail miserably (John M. Chu in G.I. Joe: Retaliation comes to mind). Whatever your perspective on Bay or his copycats, it’s worth noting the things he does that work.

There is no question that Michael Bay has many…

Happy Fourth Of July!

Happy Fourth Of July!

There won’t be any movie news today because it’s Independence Day and I have things to do! Here in the United States, it’s a day for hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, beer, and fireworks. Normally I would happily partake in all of those — and the opportunity may indeed present itself — but I’ll actually be attending a wedding today first. So double celebration for me: Independence and, well, togetherness.

You all enjoy yourselves, shoot off lots of fireworks, find some cool fireworks to watch, have a beer, grill some man food, you guys know the drill. Have fun, be safe, don’t drink and drive, and…

‘Enchanted 2’ On The Way

‘Enchanted 2’ On The Way
Erin Strecker — Entertainment Weekly

Seven years after Amy Adams brought fairy tales into modern New York City, Enchanted is—finally!—continuing after ever, ever after, according to Deadline.

J. David Stem and David N. Weiss (Shrek 2, The Smurfs) will write a sequel to Enchanted, with Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, The Guilt Trip) set to direct the follow-up to Disney’s worldwide hit, according to Deadline‘s report. There currently isn’t any word on whether any or all of the original stars—Amy Adams, James Marsden, Patrick Dempsey, Idina Menzel, and Susan Sarandon, among others—will return, or what exactly the plot details will…

‘Batman’ (1960s) Blu-ray Remastered Trailer

‘Batman’ (1960s) Blu-ray Remastered Trailer

I sure loved the reruns of this show growing up but I can’t think of anything more apalling now. Funny how that works. And yet, as apalling as it is, I do get sort of nostalgic whenever I see clips from this show. It’s a cheesy and a cheesy piece of cheese, but it’s just a part of my childhood I guess.

This Blu-ray set of 120 episodes in all its remastered HD glory can be yours in November. Check out the trailer:

Honest Trailer: ‘Planet of the Apes’ (2001)

Honest Trailer: ‘Planet of the Apes’ (2001)

Tim Burton’s 2001 Planet of the Apes has to be one of the worst films in existence. So obviously, the Honest Trailer for this one nails it. And I’m certainly looking forward to the upcoming film and expect it to be even better than the rebooted reboot, which was decent enough.

Transformers: Age of Extinction — Review

1.5 of 5 stars
Transformers: Age of Extinction

This movie exists for one reason: you people keep seeing these awful things. And I think I know why too. Though no one will admit to liking Michael Bay or the Transformers films, people turn up in droves. To a very small extent, it’s difficult form me to completely fault the young teenage guys from seeing these films. It is the ultimate major “make stuff go boom” franchise. Guys love that stuff. Ooo, that stuff is exploding all over, look at that helicopter crash INTO THAT GIANT ALIEN SPACESHIP!

There’s also the other obvious angle for the teen guys: hot girls in cutoff shorts and midriff…
