Box Office Report for March 15-17 Weekend

Box Office Report for March 15-17 Weekend

Oz

Still in the lead at the box office, falling only 46.6% from it’s opening weekend is Oz the Great and Powerful. It’s a decent film, certainly one of the more decent films to come out this year, and so it seems deserved (even if I’m irritated that it’s doing so much better than Jack the Giant Slayer). Domestically it raked in $42 million. Not bad for it’s second weekend. Currently, the film has brought in a worldwide total of $281,826,000 so the return is officially over the production budget. ‘Jobs’ Delayed, No New Release Date Yet

‘Jobs’ Delayed, No New Release Date Yet
Pamela McClintock - The Hollywood Reporter

Moviegoers will have to wait a bit longer to see Ashton Kutcher playing Steve Jobs.

Open Road Films is pushing back the release of Jobs, which was scheduled to hit theaters April 19, the 37th anniversary of the founding of the Apple Computer. A new date has yet to be determined (the film previously was titled jOBS).

Insiders tell The Hollywood Reporter that Open Road wanted more time to market the film, which was fully financed and produced by Mark Hulme’s Five Star Feature Films.

Well drat. I want to see this. I wish they would at least settle a new date and tell us what it is.

‘Hannibal’ TV Series Full Trailer

‘Hannibal’ TV Series Full Trailer

Hmm, I don’t know. It has some actors that I love, but it looks like a pretty dark show. I may (or may not) give this one a chance. I’m sure the trailer is playing it up a bit.

The show stars Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Caroline Dhavernasm, Lara Jean Chorostecki, Laurence Fishburne, and Gillian Anderson. It will premiere on NBC on Thursday April 4th, 2013.

Be aware that this trailer may be a bit disturbing.

Pepper Potts in a Suit?

Pepper Potts in a Suit?
Frank Digiacomo - MovieLine

If you’ve  read about the Iron Man 3 footage that Marvel Studios has shown to bloggers, then you know that, during the Mandarin’s helicopter attack on Casa Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) ends up flying to safety in one of the armored suits. It sounds like a cool scene, and I won’t be surprised if it’s a set-up for another later in the movie. But I’m not so thrilled about Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige’s recent comments that Potts could suit up for her own adventures in future Iron Man installments.

Why? I think it’s a great idea. I would love to see…

Bryan Singer as Next Star Trek Director?

Bryan Singer as Next Star Trek Director?
Anthony Pascale - TrekMovie

X-Men and Superman Returns director Bryan Singer is a fan of Star Trek and was even involved in a possible pitch for a Star Trek series which was shelved once it was announced JJ Abrams had taken on the task of rebooting Star Trek. Now that there is talk of a Star Trek movie for 2016 and with JJ Abrams set to direct the next Star Wars movie due in 2015 many are assuming that Abrams (while returning to produce) will not be in the director’s chair for the next Trek.

And so when IGN was recently speaking to director Bryan Singer they brought up the issue of Trek. Singer is no stranger to…

‘Dumb and Dumber’ Sequel

‘Dumb and Dumber’ Sequel
Emma Dibdin - Digital Spy

“We’re talking about it,” Carrey told Access Hollywood. “Jeff [Daniels] and I are really excited about it and hopefully next year we’ll be able to do that.”

Carrey reportedly dropped out of the sequel last summer, but Daniels confirmed two months later that the film would go ahead with both he and his co-star attached.

Carrey and co-director Peter Farrelly have both expressed interest in casting Emma Stone in Dumb and Dumber To.

WHY WHY WHY??? Why can a movie like this get made? Why must the box office get plugged up with this sort of stupidity.

This is why we can’t have…

Kickstarting Firefly

A wrap up to the week talking about ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ box office success and why it’s a bit disappointing in light of ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ doing so poorly, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Teaser Trailer #2 and Anthony Pascale’s deep, shot by shot analysis of that, release reshuffling with ‘RED 2’ and ‘Now You See Me’, ‘Star Trek “3”’ might be out for the 50th anniversary, Emma Watson decides not to become a Disney princess and take the part of the live action Cinderella, a mode of the Enterprise E, an article on motion smoothing on modern TVs and why you should make sure that setting is off on your television set, the ‘Veronica Mars’ Kickstarter meeting its funding goal in short order with many days left to really boost the budget, as well as what this might mean for the future of film, and Joss Whedon considering the options for a Kickstarter with ‘Firefly. What to see: Weekend of March 15, 2013

We’ve got a couple of things coming out in cinemas, and a few things still in the cinemas that you might be interested in seeing. We’re slowly but surely getting away from the absolute trash that was in theaters for a couple of dull, dreadful months.

New This Weekend

The Call - R
I plan to see this film tomorrow evening (hopefully). I’m hoping for a decent, film, but probably not a great one. I’m going to venture a guess that this will be a 3 or possibly a 3.5 star rating from me. We’ll see.

When veteran 911 operator, Jordan (Halle Berry), takes a life-altering call from a teenage…

3 Clips from ‘The Host’

3 Clips from ‘The Host’

I’m liking the look of this film as a sci-fi thriller and have at least a little hope that it might be fun and entertaining. I haven’t seen anything really off-putting about the film yet. And I do love a good Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

This film is an adaptation of the nove from Stephanie Meyer of the same name. Hopefully that won’t put you off if you are not a big fan of her other work, there are no sparkly vampires to be found here.

Joss Whedon on Kickstarter and ‘Firefly’

Joss Whedon on Kickstarter and ‘Firefly’
Adam B. Vary - BuzzFeed

Practically from the first moment that Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell announced their Kickstarter campaign for Veronica Mars movie — and certainly after the project amassed over $2.5 million in 24 hours — people began wondering if the same could be done for another gone-before-its-time TV series.

Joss Whedon was one of them.

“Yes, obviously, the next thing will be that we will try to Kickstart a Dollhouse reunion,” Whedon tells BuzzFeed.

He’s joking, folks. Whedon — a professed Veronica Mars super-fan — says he knew almost instantly that now that fan-based funding had been proven…
