Video On Demand - Feb 5, 2013

Three notable new releases to streaming and video on demand that you might be interested in watching:

Skyfall

Not the great film that critics seem to rave about, but it’s a fine film and worth watching. It has great cinematography, great acting and character development, and more. And even though I was a bit disappointed in Silva, he’s still a good villain. So the film is worth watching. Read my review here. I gave it 3.5 of 5 stars.

You should most certainly watch this film. This made it into my personal top ten films of 2012 and it’s a…

Pascale’s Shot by Shot for new ‘Star Trek’ Trailer

Pascale’s Shot by Shot for new ‘Star Trek’ Trailer
TrekMovie.com

The Super Bowl Commercial for Star Trek Into Darkness is just half a minute but mixed in with stuff we saw in the previous two trailers is some new (and very interesting) stuff, along with some new (and very intriguing) dialogue. Below TrekMovie has a full shot-by-shot analysis of the commercial. We also have caps of what was in the ‘extended’ version available on the mobile app. As always, beware of Spoilers.

I think the thing that caught my attention the most when I watched the trailer was this:

GOODBYE ENTERPRISE ALERT?!
The above (and below) shots are somewhat reminiscent of…

Buy Advance Screening Tickets for ‘Star Trek’

You can be one of the first to see Star Trek Into Darkness by attending a “Fan Sneak” showing on the evening of Wednesday May 15th. You can buy tickets now exclusively via Fandango. The early screenings were announced by Paramount via the new mobile app which added a new Fandango button. If you click that button you are lead to a list of local screenings.

I could not get it to work through Fandango’s website, but going through the Star Trek Into Darkness app worked for me. So I’m in, and I even have a fairly decent seat (IMAX being reserved seating and all). Awesome!

Superbowl Trailers

Superbowl Trailers

It’s pretty safe to say that I hate sports. Well okay, some sports are tolerable when I’m the one doing the playing. But I cannot stand watching sports on TV, and I can barely stand watching most sports in person on the sidelines. I know that this puts in me in the bottom 10th of a group of less than 1% of the citizens of the United States of America, but I can’t help it. I just don’t like sports and never have.

But one good thing did come from the Super Bowl…

THE GODADDY COMMERCIAL!!!

Um, no. No that was just disgusting, wrong, and stupid! No, we got a whole bunch of trailers! And…

Nullifying ‘Firefly’ Character’s Death

Nullifying ‘Firefly’ Character’s Death
Digital Trends

Even though Firefly has been cancelled for over 10 years, we still feel it’s necessary to warn you: Spoilers ahead!

...

After describing in detail just how crushing the death of Wash was to his psyche, Hill begins to breakdown the science behind it. Wash was killed off at the end of Serenity, a victim of a Reaver spear that blasted through the spaceship’s forward-facing windows. After analyzing NASA forums, technical reports, and glass manufacturing data, Hill concluded that there was a chance the spear would have been unable to pierce the impact-resistant glass surely present on a…

James Horner To Score ‘Enders Game’

James Horner To Score ‘Enders Game’
/Film

Oscar-winning composer James Horner has been hired by director Gavin Hood to write the music for Ender’s Game. The film, scheduled for release November 1, stars Asa Butterfield as a kid-genius recruited to space so he can train as a military leader. Harrison Ford co-stars along with Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Aramis Knight, Moises Arias and others.

What was the last good film Horner Scored? The Legend of Zorro in 2005? (Yes, there’s Avatar — but I said good film). So yeah, I’m definitely in it to hear a good score from Horner!

Also, the film looks interesting:

‘Die Hard Clip’ Ballroom Gunfight

‘Die Hard Clip’ Ballroom Gunfight

Tough situation? check. Evil bad guy? check. Lots of guns and crazy stuff? check. Uh, yep, looks like Die Hard.

And it looks like the apple doens’t fall too far from the tree where McClane’s son is concerned. Check it out.

‘Die Hard’ Villains Featurette

‘Die Hard’ Villains Featurette

Did you know that July 15 will mark the 25th anniversary of the releast  of the original Die Hard? Well neither did I until just now. And in honor of that fact, Fox has released the 25th Anniversary Die Hard Collection on Blu-ray. The set has quite a few bonus features I’m given to undersand, including one called Bad to the Bone and I’ve got a sample of that one for you.

Personally, Alan Rickman’s Hans Gruber is still the best but Jeremy Irons takes a close second.

Kathleen Kennedy Persuades J.J.

Kathleen Kennedy Persuades J.J.
The Hollywood Reporter

In November, a journalist asked J.J. Abrams what seemed like an obvious question: Was he interested in directing the next Star Wars movie? Disney had just paid a whopping $4.05 billion to acquire George Lucas’ iconic Lucasfilm and had stated its intention to turn out new Star Wars films every two to three years beginning in 2015. The prolific Abrams, who had sparked the flagging Star Trek series in 2009, seemed a natural fit. But he quickly shot the idea down. While Star Wars was “the first movie that blew my mind in that way,” he said then, he wanted to focus on original…

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters — Review

3 of 5 stars
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Hey look, it’s another “Renner has a Boom Stick” film.

This one is a twist on a familiar fairytale, but for the most part you won’t recognize it. At first you might recognize elements of the original fairytale, with a few minor differences. But that’s just used as a backstory for the real tale of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

While this story is squarely placed in the magical world of fantasy, it bears little resemblance to recent, highly rated fantasy films such as popular Marvel titles ThorCaptain AmericaThe Avengers and the like. Or perhaps a more apt comparison would be to…
