Live Broadcast — In a Starship Lived a Hobbit…

Be sure to tune in tonight to the live broadcast for yet another exciting and very special episode of The MovieByte Podcast. We’ll be joined by some very special guests. First up will be Anthony Pascale of TrekMovie.com to talk about the Star Trek trailer, and the nine minute Star Trek preview available to IMAX viewers of The Hobbit. That should be a lot of fun.

Then we’ll be joined by none other than Clark Douglas, radio station manager of WHIE in Griffin GA, and host of The Sounds and Sights of Cinema podcast, and a new guest, Marcus Pitman. We’ll be discussing The Hobbit, and I expect…

The Effects of ‘Skyfall’

The Effects of ‘Skyfall’
FXguide

We take a look at just some of the major sequences, including the opening train sequence and Bond’s shooting, the MI6 explosion, the Komodo dragon casino attack, the London Underground encounter, the final Scottish highlands scenes and the main titles.

I haven’t gotten to all of this yet, but it’s a lot of fun. Check it out!

Veronica Belmont, ‘Looper’ Fact or Fictional?

Veronica Belmont, ‘Looper’ Fact or Fictional?

Veronica Belmont explores the possibilities of time travel and whether Looper could really happen or not. Personally, I put it squarely in the fictional realm and enjoy it on that level, but apparently Veronica’s guest, Dr. Ronald Mallett calls time travel a scientific possibility.

This one is a lot of fun. Enjoy.

Roger Ebert Reviews ‘Red Dawn’

Roger Ebert Reviews ‘Red Dawn’
Roger Ebert

The velocity of events picks up considerably, however, in an endless and mindless combat sequence in which the Wolverines prove to be fierce combat troops and the North Koreans are reassuringly incompetent. The kids, even the girlfriends, are adept at handling heavy-duty automatic weapons, even machineguns mounted on top of captured vehicles (or pointing out the sun roofs of their cars).

They’re also gifted strategists, instinctively occupying the high ground and spraying bullets down upon the hapless enemy forces who are often conveniently lined up in the street below. They achieve…

Cyber Monday Geek Deal

Looking for a deal on this bright and cheery Cyber Monday Morning? A deal that doesn’t involve Black Friday Madness? Well that’s really the beauty of Cyber Monday is that you can do it from the comfort of you chair.

Amazon has a killer deal if you are a Star Trek geek. You can get the complete Star Trek: The Original Series remastered on DVD for $108.99 (normally $249) or on Blu-ray for $129.99 (normally $321). Seems like a killer deal to me. Go here to take advantage of this deal on Amazon.

‘House of Cards’ - Original Netflix Drama

‘House of Cards’ - Original Netflix Drama

I find it interesting to see the phenomenon of original content airing on Hulu and Netflix. Frankly none of the shows up until now to do this have looked remotely interesting to me, but I do applaud the idea. This seems to be the only way forward since the networks and existing infrastructure are just not forward thinking enough to realize where they need to be going — what the future of television will ultimately look like. They cling to existing, dying business models as one might cling to the rails of a sinking ship. One of my biggest frustrations as a cable cutter is that I can’t watch…

Christian Bale Stands for Life

Christian Bale Stands for Life
Movieguide.com

“He [Chen] had exposed a program of forced abortion and sterilization in Shandong,” Bale told attendees at a Human Rights First event. “A program of forced abortion means that women are being dragged from their homes against their will. They are being forced to have abortions, sometimes late-term – imagine that – with some women reportedly dying in the process.”

“This is true horror,” he added. “And, in this insane world, this man, Chen, who was helping these women – who was living by some of the most simple, brave and universally admired values – values we teach our children every day,…

‘Skyfall’ Sound Design

‘Skyfall’ Sound Design

I actually found a couple of these videos I’ll be sharing over the next couple of days. Today: Skyfall.

Whatever else you can say about Skyfall, the sound design was great, from music, to foley, to even as the video below says, the choices where not to use sound were very well chosen. I am aways fascinated and intrigued by good sound design and how it affects story telling and mood and works in concert with the visuals to form a complete picture. The sound design can so completely change the character and feel of what you are seeing on screen, It is a very powerful element.

Ebert Liked ‘Skyfall’

Ebert Liked ‘Skyfall’
Roger Ebert’s Journal

In this 50th year of the James Bond series, with the disappointing “Quantum of Solace” (2008) still in our minds, “Skyfall” triumphantly reinvents 007 in one of the best Bonds ever made. This is a full-blooded, joyous, intelligent celebration of a beloved cultural icon, with Daniel Craig taking full possession of a role he earlier played well in “Casino Royale,” not so well in “Quantum”—although it may not have been entirely his fault. I don’t know what I expected in Bond #23, but certainly not an experience this invigorating.

This film really got Ebert’s attention. I wish I could get…

A Disney Conspiracy

A Disney Conspiracy
Examiner.com

Disney/Pixar tried to pull a fast one on us. They thought we wouldn’t notice, but—aha!—we’re too smart for them!

This is pure speculation on my part, but after seeing Wreck-It Ralph this past weekend, I am officially convinced that Disney/Pixar swapped studio names between this film andBrave, which was released earlier this summer. (You probably noticed that Brave was released as a “Pixar” movie, and Wreck-It-Ralph as a “Disney” movie. Yeah, right.) Why, do you ask, do I suspect such a conspiracy? I’m glad you asked!

A great article from Joseph’s brother, Nathaniel. While I doubt it’s…
