‘The Great Gatsby’ UK Trailer

‘The Great Gatsby’ UK Trailer

Some more on The Great Gatsby. This in the form of a 90 second UK trailer. This is one of those deals that I wonder if I would be far more interested if I had read the source materiel. As it is I’m having a hard time finding the draw and determining what the basic plot is or why I would be interested. Even the synopsis seems unhelpful, which makes me think the filmmakers don’t really know why they are making it either. I’ve been told to give it a chance. Okay, I will.

Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across…

‘Captain America 2’ Begins Production - First Image
Germain Lussier - /Film

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for release one year from now, on April 4, 2014. So that’s exactly how long directors Anthony and Joe Russo will have to complete the film. Principal photography began Monday, and Disney released the first image along with a full press release. The release confirms the returns of Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, and the presence of new additions Robert Redford, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Georges St. Pierre and others.

Check out the photo, they use regular old flags and C-Stands just like we do on the low budget indie productions I…

Watch Full ‘Hannibal’ Pilot on Hulu

Watch Full ‘Hannibal’ Pilot on Hulu

Jack Crawford, head of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit, enlists profiler Will Graham to find a serial killer who’s preying on young girls.

I have not had a chance to watch this, I’m still getting caught up on some shows from last week that I was not able to watch with everything I had going on in my personal life. But I have added it to my queue and will hopefully be watching it tonight.

The critics seem to be raving about Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy‘s performances as Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham, plus lots of other praise for the show such as the production design and…

“Pixar Will Be Fine”

“Pixar Will Be Fine”
Sandie Angulo Chen - Film.com

I have three children, ages 11, 8 and 5, so I’m entitled to use my sternest sounding mother voice to say this to all of the concerned folks who think Pixar is ruining its legacy: “Calm down.” Seriously, give it a break. The world isn’t ending, Pixar isn’t selling its soul, and there’s no reason to fear the coming of “Finding Dory.”

...

And although I don’t know anyone who has seen the upcoming “Monsters Inc.” prequel “Monsters University” yet, the trailers and clips make it look as charming as the original. I can tell you without a doubt that I’d rather see “Monsters University” than…

Box Office Report: April 8, 2013

Box Office Report: April 8, 2013

The box office has thus far had a bit of a lack-luster run. I don’t think this weekend changes that for any individual film, but the overall total seems to be a bit more positive. Folks came out to the theaters this weekend.

#1 Evil Dead

Not a film I am in the least interested in, it did come in on top this weekend at $26 million in 3,025 theaters. With a foreign total of $4.5 million, the worldwide total is $30.5 million. And on a budget of $17 million I suppose the studios and producers will call it a win. l call it a massive loss for the human race that such a wretched looking film…

‘The Great Gatsby’ 30 Second Spot

‘The Great Gatsby’ 30 Second Spot

So it occurred to me when I saw this trailer that I have not posted anything about this film yet. That is because it does not look interesting to me in the slightest. But I try to cover a broad range of films and whatnot so It seems like I should get some stuff on the site about it. I know literally nothing about the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald on which this film is based, which may be why I am completely uninterested in the film. It looks like an overly stylized, overly dramatized mess of a film. But it will certainly have appeal to some.

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey MaGuire,…

New Title and Synopsis for ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’?

New Title and Synopsis for ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’?
Craig Byrne - S.H.I.E.L.D. Site

ABC has released some new information about their pilots, which includes a new title for the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, apparently, possibly to separate it from The Shield.

The new title is listed as Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Yeah… that seems like a completely suit driven and politically motivated title for the show. I hope that does not foreshadow other political motivations for the show. Ugh. What a completely uninspired name.

Heres the synopsis.

Fresh from his role in the summer’s box office smash, MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the…

“Gun” Joins ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’

“Gun” Joins ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’
Angie Han - /Film

Joss Whedon‘s habit of calling back former Whedonverse alums is well established. But with the exception of Clark Gregg, who’ll reprise his role from the movies as Agent Phil Coulson, the cast of S.H.I.E.L.D. has so far been populated with all-new faces. (Well, new to Whedon.) That changed today, as former Angel star J. August Richards joined the ABC superhero series in a mysterious role.

Excellent! I haven’t seen him in anything for a while and I liked him in Angel so this seems like a good thing to me.

Other info:

Aside from Gregg, Richards joins Ming-Na, who plays soulful…

Clark’s Thoughts on Roger Ebert

Clark’s Thoughts on Roger Ebert
Clark Douglas - Moments of Absolute Clarity

The realization that I would never again read a new Ebert review was nothing short of alarming. The man is more or less single-handedly responsible for my interest in film criticism. During my teenage years, I would quickly follow each movie I watched with a visit to Ebert’s website to read his review. Sure, I read reviews by other critics, but my relationship with Ebert was on a different level. There was something about the deeply personal, candid, unpretentious way that the famed Chicago Sun-Times critic expressed his views which really resonated with me. His work had a conversational…

Zimmer Discusses ‘Man of Steel’ Score

Zimmer Discusses ‘Man of Steel’ Score
Germain Lussier - /Film

For Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel, composer Hans Zimmer an unenviable task. Unlike in 2006′s Superman Returns where composer John Ottman was able to use John Williams‘ iconic 1978 Superman theme, Snyder preferred to distance his film from all of the previous Superman films. That meant Zimmer was tasked with writing music that would work to inspire in the context of the new film, but also wouldn’t be totally overshadowed by Williams.

I’ve been on record as liking Superman Returns. Still, I am looking forward to seeing what this complete reboot could bring to the table. And yet I still think…
