Orson Scott Card Calls Gay Marriage Issue “Moot”

Orson Scott Card Calls Gay Marriage Issue “Moot”
Grady Smith - Entertainment Weekly

Responding to reports of a nascent boycott against the upcoming movie version of his beloved 1985 sci-fi novel Ender’s Game because of his stated opposition to same-sex marriage, author Orson Scott Card has released a statement exclusively to EW.

...

Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to…

Newest ‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer

Newest ‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer

A lot of reordered stuff, and some new scenes we haven’t yet seen. A lot of boom and bang, a lot of monsters, and a lot of high stakes. Also, GLaDOS is still present! Does that mean that her voice will be just like that in the final film? It’s still kind of strange to me that such a menacing computer voice from one universe will be a neutral (presumably) computer voice in this one.

Well in any event, in just a few days, we’ll get a chance to see for ourselves whether this film is any good, because Pacific Rim comes out on July 12.

Neill Blomkamp Won’t Direct Third ‘Star Trek’ Reboot Installment

Neill Blomkamp Won’t Direct Third ‘Star Trek’ Reboot Installment
Emma Dibdin - Digital Spy

Despite admitting that he is a fan of the Star Trek universe, Blomkamp told Filmz that he is not interested in franchise filmmaking.

“I used to be a Star Trek: The Next Generation fan. Like, big time,” he explained. “But no, I probably wouldn’t do that.

“I don’t know if me getting involved with a franchise is the best thing for me. When studios smell franchises, they smell money. And they’ll try to do what they can to the franchise to make it make the most money it can make, and a lot of those interesting ideas kind of fall by the side of the road.

“Do I like Star Trek on its own…

‘Lone Ranger’ Could Be $150 Million Loss

‘Lone Ranger’ Could Be $150 Million Loss
Pamela McClintock - The Hollywood Reporter

Disney’s The Lone Ranger has ended up in the box office stockades, with the studio and even producer Jerry Bruckheimer facing a substantial loss after the meek opening of the Johnny Depp-Armie Hammer Western in North America and in its first overseas markets.

Just as Lone Ranger began rolling out in theaters July 3, Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz predicted a $100 million write-down for Disney. Now, box office experts and rival studio insiders tell The Hollywood Reporter that the loss could approach or even surpass $150 million based on final opening numbers, although they add that…

‘The Wolverine’ Train Fight Sequence (Video)

‘The Wolverine’ Train Fight Sequence (Video)

Well, it looks like they’re doing that thing where shaky camera and quick cuts takes the place of good choreography. But this is just one short sequence so maybe I’m wrong… I sure do prefer it when I can follow the action and I’m not confused by the editing and the shakiness. As it is, everything is moving so fast, both the speed and the cuts, that I can’t even tell what they’re jumping over. But, at least the music sounds interesting, right?

Obviously, we’ve already had a look at parts of this scene in the various trailers and teasers that have come out, this is obviously a bit more of a…

Gru Steals the Box Office Cash Box - Box Office Report for July 8

Gru Steals the Box Office Cash Box - Box Office Report for July 8

In one of his most stunning evil genius feats yet, super-villain Gru has used his ingenuity to make off with the cash box containing the large majority of the box office profits, foiling the justice seeking Lone Ranger who wasn’t left with much of a cash reward. I think old Tonto’s “Spirit Walker” may not be as invincible as Tonto thought after all.

Totals: $82.5 Million Opening Weekend Gross / $142 Million Domestic Total / $151.1 Million Foreign Total / $293.1 Million Worldwide Total

Boycott of ‘Ender’s Game’ — Author’s Anti-Gay Stance

Boycott of ‘Ender’s Game’ — Author’s Anti-Gay Stance
Todd Cunningham - TheWrap.com

The group Geeks Out has launched an online protest and is asking people to “Skip Ender’s Game” because of anti-gay marriage comments made by Orson Scott Card, author of the 1985 book upon which the Lionsgate film is based.

“Do not buy a ticket at the theater, do not purchase the DVD, do not watch it on-demand. Ignore all merchandise and toys,” the site implores. “By pledging to Skip Ender’s Game, we can send a clear and serious message to Card and those that do business with his brand of anti-gay activism—whatever he’s selling, we’re not buying.”

I’m doing the risky thing by going a…

Riddick TV Spot Featuring Vin Diesel

Riddick TV Spot Featuring Vin Diesel

Fast And Furious 6 is probably going to be Vin Diesel’s most successful film this year, but that’s not keeping him from staring in another one as well this year. Riddick is a sequel to The Chronicles of Riddick and I’m told that my film knowledge and education is sadly lacking in that I have not seen the first film, so I promise to remedy the situation.

I have to say the concept looks right down my alley, even if it looks like the execution is more about action than story.

Here’s the synopsis, followed by the TV Spot.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched…

Russell Crowe Would Do ‘Man of Steel’ Prequel

Russell Crowe Would Do ‘Man of Steel’ Prequel
ComingSoon.net

Russell Crowe has been receiving a lot of questions from his fans on Twitter asking him if he’d consider reprising his role of Jor-El from Man of Steel in a prequel and the actor says he’s game.

“A lot of you are asking about a KRYPTON prequel, if that’s something you feel strongly about let @Legendary pictures know your thoughts,” he said. He added, in response to someone, “Just getting sick of reading the same question mate, however, if it came up, i’d give the tights another go.”

Huh. Now that’s an interesting thought, although I find prequels to often be very challenging,…

R.I.P.D. Featurette

R.I.P.D. Featurette

So, according to a search, I have not yet posted anything about this upcoming film. I’m starting to look forward to it so I need to rectify that. In two weeks, Jeff Bridges — a dead guy — will be rounding up some up some dead, bloodthirsty, and evil spirits who refuse to move into the afterlife. I know, right?

It sounds like a crazy concept, and I was all prepared to congratulate the filmmakers on an original concept. But the Wikipedia entry seems to indicate that the film is based on a comic book so, never mind. Regardless of that though, it does look like a fun, and somewhat more…
