After Earth is heavy with Scientology themes, critics say, adding more ammunition against what is already the summer’s biggest box office flop.

The sci-fi film starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith was one of the biggest bombs in recent memory, pulling in only $27 million the first weekend. It was even beaten at the box office by Now You See Me, a movie about teleporting, bank-robbing magicians.

This is from May 31st and I’ve been meaning to post it because I thought you all might be interested in it. So better late then never right?

Many people are not too happy with After Earth, some are claiming it lacks ambition or originality. To both of those I say their nuts. Many are saying it’s due to the Scientology present in the film. Well here’s the deal, I don’t know anything about Scientology, so I evaluated the film in a very straightforward way based on the story and whether it was any good. And I have to say that while flawed, I liked it fairly well.

With the film making it’s wide theatrical release on June 14, some of you may want to hear from the man himself a little bit about the film, and I am here to satisfy that longing.

He talks about casting Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof and how he normally likes to cast them as star crossed lovers and he thought it might be nice to un-cross them, what it was like to work with someone else’s characters (again) since he’s most well known for creating new and unique original characters, oh, and what would an ice cream named after him be called… wait, what?

Who’s ready to see captain Jack Sparrow play an American Indian in The Lone Ranger? Oh, you aren’t, you don’t care you say? Too bad, because this thing is happening. And truth be told, it will probably be pretty fun, even if Johnny Depp’s style is starting to wear a little thin, at least for me. I sure hope the film is funnier than this because this isn’t going to cut it for me. I almost smiled once or twice, but I’m expecting a lot more humor than this. And I also hope there’s an actual story here. I don’t know, we’ll see, but after seeing the last Melissa McCarthy film and not liking it at all I don’t have a lot of hope for this.

Still, I like Sandra Bullock so I’m holding out hope.
