How ‘Honest Trailers’ Made ‘The Winter Soldier’ a Better Film

How ‘Honest Trailers’ Made ‘The Winter Soldier’ a Better Film
Angie Han — /Film

What’s so funny is that I’m an avid honest trailer watcher. I love it, it cracks me up. So I think we talked about it in the commentary we used to sit in the room and go, “this is not going to end up in an Honest Trailer. This logic isn’t sound enough yet.” We literally tried to Honest Trailer proof the movie. Because what Honest Trailers really is, and I’ll say litmus test again, is “how sound is the logic in your film? How ridiculous are the buys that you’re asking the audience to make?” So we would just comb through the script over and over again and go, “how do we shore up this logic?…

Jon Stewart Talks About ‘Rosewater’

Jon Stewart Talks About ‘Rosewater’
Jeff Labrecque

For Jon Stewart, last night’s screening of his directorial debut, Rosewater, was a glorious homecoming of sorts. After all, he filmed Death to Smoochy in Toronto. But last night’s standing-room-only showing at the Toronto Film Festival was a true celebration, and before the screening, Stewart joked that Canada’s earnest warm reception felt like sarcasm to a cynical New Yorker like himself. Afterwards, the audience responded with a standing ovation, as much for the real Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari, who was imprisoned and accused of being a spy by Iranian authorities, as the cast and…

‘Top Gun 2’ Back On The Map with ‘Street Fighter’ Writer

‘Top Gun 2’ Back On The Map with ‘Street Fighter’ Writer
Oliver Lyttleton

I feel the need, the need to open my copy of Final Draft: a potential sequel to “Top Gun” has been gestating for awhile, with the project officially going into development a few years ago, with Peter Craig (“The Town”) penning a script, and original director Tony Scott and star Tom Cruise said to be returning. But the project ground to a halt two years ago when Scott passed away, and little’s been heard since.

But it looks like something’s happening: The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimerhave hired a new writer for the project, one Justin Marks. The scribe…

‘Godzilla’ - The Honest Trailer

‘Godzilla’ - The Honest Trailer

Godzilla is one of those films that sours the more I think about it and the further removed I am from the watching of it. It just didn’t live up to the hype and was not at all the movie we were promised in the trailers. So while Honest Trailers will so often be an over-the-top critique of films I actually liked, this one hits much closer to home. Don’t get me wrong, even when I love the movie, I usually always enjoy the Honest Trailer, but this one is just spot on with actual criticism.

Robert Downey Jr. Says Marvel Isn’t Planning ‘Iron Man 4’

Robert Downey Jr. Says Marvel Isn’t Planning ‘Iron Man 4’
Oliver Lyttleton

The studio’s only billion-dollar grossers to date have both featured megastar Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark“The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3”and given how well both have done (and, unless the film is made up entirely of Thor throwing kittens into a combine harvester, next year’s “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” is likely to be even bigger), you would think that Marvel would be prioritizing another ‘Iron Man’ movie.

But not so much, according to the film’s star. In Toronto for the premiere of his new film “The Judge,” Downey Jr. told Variety, when asked about a possible fourth solo movie for…

Lego ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Short by Brotherhood Workshop

Lego ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Short by Brotherhood Workshop

I loved Guardians of the Galaxy, but if I were nitpicking, I would point out that cassette tapes and cassette players rarely worked in a flawless enough way to keep a tape in good shape for 30 some years. In fact, in the real world, Peter Quill’s cassette tape would have died long ago just from normal magnetic and physical deterioration of the media. Then there’s the fact that after a tape player eats a tape enough times, it either breaks or becomes completely unplayable in some fashion. Then there’s the sound quality. I know we used to listen to those (roughly) 20KHz tapes all the time back…

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Brings in the Big Bucks

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Brings in the Big Bucks
Rodrigo Perez — The Playlist

Marvel’s “Guardians Of The Galaxy” was number one for the fourth weekend (though not consecutively) and could only take it $10.7 million. That’s a pretty low figure for the #1 slot, but indicative of the slow weekend, not the movie. And besides, everything’s coming up roses for Marvel’s movie. The picture has now made $294.5 million domestically, which means that coveted $300 million mark will be surpassed either next weekend or the one afterwards. The movie has grossed $586 million worldwide in six weeks of release and has hit a lot of milestones this weekend.

There will come a time when…

‘Starring Adam West’ Trailer

‘Starring Adam West’ Trailer

When you think of Adam West, what’s the first thing you think of? That cheesy, cheesy Batman series from the 60s of course. For many, many of the middle aged to older folks in our culture, Adam West is Batman (for better or worse). We can argue about who has played the role best over the years, but there is no doubt that the name of Adam West is recognizable, and in many ways, iconic.

That’s why I’m interested in seeing this film.

‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ Featurette

‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ Featurette

I can’t decide whether I’m looking forward to this film or not. But I am keeping an eye on it in any event. It certainly looks grand and epic. Obviously the director of Gladiator directing this picture is interesting in theory. But I also know I will be extremely hard to please with a Biblical film. As with other Biblicaly based films, I will attempt to judge it on two levels, 1). is it a good film — does it tell a good story and is it fun and engaging? and 2). how does it measure up to the Biblical tale?

Here’s a featurette where Mr. Scott talks about the film a little and we get to see…
