What to see: Weekend of May 10, 2013

It’s that time of week again, our work is almost done and it’s time to head and play for the weekend. And of course, you’ll probably want to see a film but you don’t know exactly which one. Well, I can’t decide which one to go see for you, but I can help you determine which films are the best candidates.

New This Weekend

The Great Gatsby - PG13
I really didn’t enjoy the 1974 version with Robert Redford very much at all, from a lack of good story telling, inept editing, poor morals, upholding bad people as heroes and more, that film was simply bad. On the one hand I’m happy to report…

Mark Hamill Likes Jar Jar (and the prequels, ugh)

Mark Hamill Likes Jar Jar (and the prequels, ugh)
Joe Cunningham - The Playlist

On the three movies that made him famous, Hamill spoke with his tongue firmly in his cheek about ‘Return of the Jedi’ in particular. Regarding the twist at the end of the tale that Leia is actually Luke’s sister, Hamill suggested as an alternative: “Why not have Boba Fett remove his helmet, shake out some beautiful hair, and…Oh my god, it’s mom! She’s been a double agent all these years!”

Okay, that’s a little weird. I hope they don’t let him make any suggestions or additions to the cannon.

Also, man I think this part might make me gag:

...he also defended the changes that George…

Kevin Feige Is Delusional

Kevin Feige Is Delusional
Edward Davis - The Playlist

The crux of the negotiations argument is that Robert Downey Jr. is their flagship star, and he’s still comparatively under-compensated (though he was paid $50 million for “The Avengers,” the four films he has appeared in for Marvel have grossed $3.4 billion dollars together). This will be a big sticking point for Marvel who clearly thinks they are probably paying him enough. Anyhow, when asked about the future films starring Tony Stark, Kevin Feige says Marvel can live on without Robert Downey Jr.

“I believe there will be a fourth ‘Iron Man’ and a fifth, sixth and a 10th and a 20th,” he…

Iron Man 3 - Where’s my Super Suit? — Review

4 of 5 stars
Iron Man 3 - Where’s my Super Suit?

Does the suit make the man? This is the fundamental question Tony Stark is asking in Iron Man 3. Well that, and how on earth do you live in the world when you know there are aliens and you were almost killed by them?

You see, Iron Man is a bit of a wreck since the events of New York (see The Avengers). He can’t sleep, he’s obessed with building better and better suits — and he doesn’t know who he is without the suit(s). When his former head of security, Happy Hogan, is seriously injured in a bomb blast by a terrorist known as the Mandarin, he gives his home address to the media and says…

‘Man of Steel’ Trailer Music

‘Man of Steel’ Trailer Music

My feelings about John Williams are well known by anyone who follows my work. If you are a fan of John Williams, and want to be angry at me, tune in to The MovieByte Podcast Episode 42 where Joe and I talked with Dan Benjamin a bit about this topic.

The bottom line is that I love — LOVE — many of Williams’ iconic themes. And perhaps my favorite of those is the Superman March, Lois’ theme and much more from the original Superman film. In keeping with that, Superman, any Superman, feels “off” without that theme. I was definitely missing it in the latest trailer when we finally got a taste…

Netflix’s “Streamageddon”

Netflix’s “Streamageddon”

Jason Bailey writing over at Flavorwire:

Mashable’s Tuesday piece on “Streamageddon” prompted this response from Netflix: “Our goal is to be an expert programmer, offering a mix that delights our members, rather than trying to be a broad distributor.” Further, the company told The Verge, “The vast majority of the titles that expire on Wednesday are older features that were aggregated by Epix. We recently added many great, more recent titles such as ParaNorman (Universal), Hunger Games (Epix), Safe (Epix) andBachelorette (Weinstein).”

Now, let’s really unpack those statements. First of…

Box Office Report: May 6, 2013 - Iron Man Wins by WIDE Margin

Box Office Report: May 6, 2013 - Iron Man Wins by WIDE Margin

I think we have a winner this week, a big winner. In fact, almost as big as The Avengers opening weekend.

#1 - Iron Man 3

Budget: $200 Million
Totals: $175.3 Million Domestic / $504.8 Million Current Foreign Total / $680.1 Million Worldwide Total
Week Number: 1

Obviously, as we knew it would, Iron Man 3 has taken the top spot, and it has done so by a gigantic margin. Of course this film opened overseas more than a week ago and was already bringing home the big bucks before it opened here in the U.S. This being just the first week out Stateside, I think we can project this film is…

What to see: Weekend of May 3, 2013

Hey, look at that! There’s actually a new film out worthing seeing this weekend! Let’s take a look.

Opening This Weekend

Iron Man 3 - PG-13
This is a pretty great installment in the Marvel Universe. And I loved that it wasn’t just about the suites and another guy with suites more powerful than Iron Man’s suit, etc. etc. This movie had heart, and it was a story about the characters, not the metal that the characters wear. And there were some surprises to the plot that were unexpect, unlike Iron Man 2, which felt a little bit like a paint by numbers job. Definitely worth seeing this one!…

‘White House Down’ Trailer 2

‘White House Down’ Trailer 2

Could this possibly be any good. Actually, it looks like it “could” though I don’t know if I’ll hold my breath or anything. But this sort of things can be fun when done right.

Somehow, I missed the first trailer for this film as this appears to be trailer number 2. Indeed, I haven’t heard much about it before now, but it looks like the film opens on June 28. It’s directed by Roland Emmerich and stars Channing Tatum (which makes me a little suspicious, but then again, Roland Emmerich… well, come to think of it, he has a couple of decent movies but nothing I’m overly fond of. But my point…

The Last Reel-To-Reel

The Last Reel-To-Reel
NPR

It’s the end of an era at the Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs, Ohio. On Tuesday, the theater will run its old, 35 mm film projector for the last time. Then, starting Wednesday, it will close for several months to install an expensive new digital projection system.

The Little Art’s conversion comes in response to a sweeping mandate from big Hollywood studios that all of the country’s theaters — big and small — convert to digital. The studios say they’re going to stop offering their movies on film, so theaters that don’t convert — or can’t afford to — won’t be able to screen new…
