Watching It Wrong

Watching It Wrong
Scott Tobias - A.V. Club

As much as my inner dictator would like to slip into every home, Santa Claus-style, and adjust the settings on people’s TV sets, they have the right to watch things however they like. In hotels across America right now, people are watching stretchy analog signals on HD sets and even cable outlets are broadcasting old TV shows like Seinfeld at 16:9, lest they field complaints about the dreaded black bars that would frame the show as it was actually photographed. It’s not just that people are watching TV wrong—it’s that they’re being encouraged to watch TV wrong. Funhouse distortion has…

Weta VFX Reel

Weta VFX Reel

So Weta Workshop has a VFX Reel, and it’s as awesome as you might imagine. Frankly, I’m not sure at this point why Weta needs a reel, everone knows who they are and that they do magnificient VFX work, but I suppose even the best feel the need to showcase their work for the world. And I love that they show some of the modeling and sculpting work that goes into all of it too. It’s not just the CGI, there a lot of other work that goes into their stuff too.

See for yourself.

Joss Whedon Talks ‘Star Wars’

Joss Whedon Talks ‘Star Wars’

Joss Whedon mentioned Star Wars!!!! OMG YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, wasn’t it in the back of all the fan boys’ minds that it would be fun to see Joss direct a Star Wars film? I mean, he would have been interested if not for his commitments to The Avengers 2.

So recently, Joss talked for about 10 seconds about Star Wars saying that he wouldn’t go back, he’d go forward and he wouldn’t want to have the original characters in the film. So put me in the category that I’m glad he’s not doing it then. Yes, yes, I know. But what I want to see is a send off for the first of…

Conversation about ‘House of Cards’ with David Fincher

Conversation about ‘House of Cards’ with David Fincher
Peter Sciretta - /Film

Last night I attended a screening of the first two episodes of House of Cards, followed by a conversation with David Fincher. I had already watched the entire series on Netflix, but it was great to see the show on a huge screen. Unlike other shows I’ve seen in special theater broadcasts, House of Cards felt more like a movie in the large format.

Love this:

6. Fincher would not have made House of Cards Without Kevin Spacey

When Fincher read the pilot script, he couldn’t think of anyone but Kevin Spacey for the main role. “We needed a cunning linguist, we needed someone who could run…

Why Raimi Didn’t Do ‘Spider-Man 4’

Why Raimi Didn’t Do ‘Spider-Man 4’
Kyle Buchanan - Vulture.com

I hope enough time has passed that you feel comfortable talking about Spider-Man 4, which was in preproduction and began casting but fell apart before shooting began. What happened there?
It really was the most amicable and undramatic of breakups: It was simply that we had a deadline and I couldn’t get the story to work on a level that I wanted it to work. I was very unhappy with Spider-Man 3, and I wanted to make Spider-Man 4 to end on a very high note, the best Spider-Man of them all. But I couldn’t get the script together in time, due to my own failings, and I said to Sony, “I don’t…

Disney and ‘The Wizard of Oz’ History

Disney and ‘The Wizard of Oz’ History
Drew Taylor - The Playlist

This weekend’s opulent 3D fantasia “Oz, The Great And Powerful,” directed by former “Spider-Man” directorSam Raimi, is one of Disney‘s biggest movies of the year – a dreamy, technologically advanced marvel that cost $200 million to produce and god knows how much to market. And while this is the latest film from the Mouse House to flirt with the “Wizard of Oz” mythos (originally developed in a series of best-selling fantasy novels by American author L. Frank Baum), it is far from the first. In fact, Disney has been doggedly pursuing the world of Oz, to varying degrees of success, since the…

8 ‘Star Wars’ Prequel Lessons

Lesson #1: Please Don’t Make it About Intergalactic Trade and Taxation Laws

This may come as a shock to any accountants out there, but very few of us want pretty much the first words we read when we sit down to watch a family-friendly adventure film to be, “The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute”.

You know what would have been a better subject for the Star Wars prequels? ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING. Anakin’s quest to “Bring Balance to the Force” by finding and confronting Darth Sidious. A mysterious virus decimating the Jedi. Hell, even an uprising staged by a…

Billion Dollar Super Heroes

Billion Dollar Super Heroes

A fan emailed this in to me and I thought it was pretty good fun. Could you be one of the super-heroes if you had a billion dollars? Let this info-graphic break down the costs for you. This stuff is a bit pricey! Unfortunately, I’ll have to stick to writing about super heroes rather than being one at these prices.
