What to see: Weekend of June 28 2013

This weekend the box office will really be “heating” things up and taking the “white house down” while vampires live their secret lives. Let’s take a look, shall we?

New This Weekend

The Heat - R

I’m kind of looking forward to this film but I have this nagging feeling that I’m going to be disappointed. Still, seems like there should be some good laughs in it, right? (surely there will be).

Uptight and straight-laced, FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a methodical investigator with a reputation for excellence—and hyper-arrogance. Shannon Mullins (Melissa…

What to see: Weekend of June 21, 2013

I have a sad. I still don’t get to see Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing. It’s infuriating, but it’s not playing anywhere around the Nashville area. I even opened up Fandango’s search parameters to within 100 miles. Nothing. I want to see it! This sort of thing makes it hard for me to know whether I should include it on my what to see list. I’ll just say that if it’s playing in your area you may want to see it.

Of course, with Monsters University and World War Z opening this weekend, it’s not like we lack anything to watch anyway, so carry on.

‘Man of Steel’ Universe Will “Reboot” Batman

‘Man of Steel’ Universe Will “Reboot” Batman
Jon Lyus - HeyUGuys

Talking to David Goyer, screenwriter for Man of Steel:

When pushed on the possibility of the Justice League movie following on directly from Man of Steel he elaborated,

It would be disingenuous to say Warner Bros doesn’t hope that this would be the starting point for a shared universe. And Zack has said that Bruce Wayne exists in this universe. It would be a different Bruce Wayne from Chris’ [Nolan] Dark Knight trilogy, and it would be disingenuous to say that Zack and I haven’t had various conversations on set, around ‘what if’ and ‘moving forward’.

That having been said, it’s all…

zOMW MAN OF STEEL!!!!1!!!11! Yeah, I might be a little excited about that one.

Man of Steel — PG-13

I have slowly come around to wanting to see this film very badly. I believe this film is going to be one of the better films of the summer. Whether it will be the best or not remains to be seen. My initial hesitance was only due to the fact that I loved Superman Returns so much. To date it is my favorite Superman film (though Superman the Movie will always have a special place in my…

What to see: Weekend of June 7, 2013

There is absolutely nothing new opening this weekend that I want to see. Nothing. I mean seriously, The Internship? That has to be the biggest product placement film in the history of mankind. I mean the film is about Google. No thank you.

Now I should be clear, there is one film opening here and there that I would be interested in seeing, but it’s not a wide release and it’s not in my area so I’m out of luck.

New This Weekend

The Internship - PG-13

This film looks dreadful to me. I’ve seen the trailers and I just can’t get into it. Something feels a little off about it and I…

What to see: Weekend of May 31, 2013

This weekend Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Mélanie Laurent are going to see if they can work some magic at the box office (see what I did there?), and Will Smith, along with his son Jaden, are going to crash on an inhospitable future earth.

New This Weekend

After Earth - PG-13

I am not hearing good things about this new film from M. Night Shyamalan, which is not really surprising. He used to make a few good films but his efforts lately have been… shall we say lackluster? I’m still reserving judgment and…

Epic — Review

4 of 5 stars
Epic

I’ll admit, I went into the theater to watch this film with low expectations. Maybe it’s the fact that the production company and guys behind the story were also behind the likes of Ice AgeRobotsRio, and more. It did not instill confidence. And the trailers failed to inspire me. Couple those things with the entirely lackluster promotional campaign and one did not get the sense that this film would be any more than a bit of drivel peppered in amongst the big summer tent polls.

I was therefore exceedingly shocked to walk out of the theater at the end of the credits having thoroughly…

I’m thinking Star Trek Into Darkness may still be the best thing to see in theaters this week as far as I’m concerned. The new releases this weekend are not looking great. I’ll be seeing Epic because we’re reviewing it on the Podcast next week, and because I’m mildly interested, and because I’ve already seen Star Trek Into Darkness twice.

Here’s what we’ve got:

New This Weekend

Epic - PG
This actually looks a little bit interesting, but that’s all I can muster to say about it. So, kind of “meh.” It looks like they’ve mixed a little Ferngully with a little Avatar, then added a smidge…

Anthony Pascale Analyzes ‘Into Darkness’ Opening Numbers

Anthony Pascale Analyzes ‘Into Darkness’ Opening Numbers
Anthony Pascale - TrekMovie.com

The final weekend results are in and Star Trek Into Darkness is the #1 movie in the world, bringing in over $110M over the weekend giving it a global gross of over $164M. Analysts mostly agree the film had a solid domestic performance (but behind expectations) and impressive overseas sales. More details and analysis of the analysis below.

Why is the film missing projections? It is a bit odd since everyone — EVERYONE — that matters loves the film.

It is hard to predict where the film will go from here but domestically it looks like Into Darkness may not outperform the 2009 Star…

Oh, let’s see, I don’t know but maybe YOU SHOULD SEE STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS THIS WEEKEND! But it’s not big deal if you don’t…

Oh who am I kidding, I will never speak to you again if you do not!

New This Weekend

Star Trek Into Darkness - PG-13
I greatly enjoyed this film and liked it a lot better than J.J.‘s first installment in the reboot of this franchise. I gave my preliminary report of the film over here, and we’ll be talking about it on The MovieByte Podcast this coming Wednesday at 6:30 PM Central Time, so you’ll want to see it this weekend to get up to date for that…
