There is absolutely nothing new opening this weekend that I want to see. Nothing. I mean seriously, The Internship? That has to be the biggest product placement film in the history of mankind. I mean the film is about Google. No thank you.

Now I should be clear, there is one film opening here and there that I would be interested in seeing, but it’s not a wide release and it’s not in my area so I’m out of luck.

I’ll admit, I went into the theater to watch this film with low expectations. Maybe it’s the fact that the production company and guys behind the story were also behind the likes of Ice Age, Robots, Rio, and more. It did not instill confidence. And the trailers failed to inspire me. Couple those things with the entirely lackluster promotional campaign and one did not get the sense that this film would be any more than a bit of drivel peppered in amongst the big summer tent polls.

I’m thinking Star Trek Into Darkness may still be the best thing to see in theaters this week as far as I’m concerned. The new releases this weekend are not looking great. I’ll be seeing Epic because we’re reviewing it on the Podcast next week, and because I’m mildly interested, and because I’ve already seen Star Trek Into Darkness twice.

The final weekend results are in and Star Trek Into Darkness is the #1 movie in the world, bringing in over $110M over the weekend giving it a global gross of over $164M. Analysts mostly agree the film had a solid domestic performance (but behind expectations) and impressive overseas sales. More details and analysis of the analysis below.
