“Tron: Legacy” and “Oblivion” director Joseph Kosinski is teaming with “Pacific Rim” writer Travis Beacham for the pretty awesomely titled “Ballistic City.” The ambitious premise is set in a city contained within a spaceship that’s headed to an unknown world, following a former cop who falls into the criminal underworld, in something that’s described as a cross between “Blade Runner” and “Battlestar Galactica.” And that’s a mix we can get behind. I have no idea what this show might be beyond the trailer and description synopsis below, but isn’t it a little odd that SyFy is getting back in to, you know, sci-fi after shunning it and canceling practically all of its sci-fi shows? I don’t know how much I trust them right now.

When a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, they quickly find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind’s salvation or total annihilation.

They briefly discuss the new ‘Man of Steel’ trailer, all three are looking forward to the film, then they turn their attention to the final ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ trailer. They discuss first impressions, general thoughts, marketing ‘Star Trek’ to a broader international audience, the big old ship Cumberbatch is driving around in, is the villain Khan or not, captain Kirk’s disposition, destroying the Enterprise… again…, and the fact that most Trekkies are loving the trailer. Then after bidding farewell to Anthony, TJ and Joe discuss the film ‘42’ about the life of Jackie Robinson and his struggle as a black man in Major League Baseball during a time of incredible racism.

There is a swell new trailer for Man of Steel. Actually, it’s beyond swell; it’s epic. In fact, it’s so epic, if you removed a few of the fast cuts to give a bit more plot clarity, and then add in something about Superman conquering General Zod, then, well, you’d probably have the world’s most epic 3-minute film.

It reminds me of the 2002 Spider-man Trailer where just about the only part missing is Spider-man actually defeating the Green Goblin.

With trailers like these, who needs movies?

13: Sherlock, A Study in Pink

After wrapping up last week’s discussion about across the pond media, TJ and Alex riff on Hannibal, Oblivion and of course, Sherlock: A Study in Pink.

I’m back after missing an episode! Head on over to catch the latest episode in which I discuss the British television show Sherlock with my friend Alex Arena.

What a week for trailers! I still have a slightly bad feeling about this film, but this trailer did help to get me a little more interested. There’s going to be a little bit of story here it looks like. Now, all the story may be in the trailer — that has been known to happen before. But this trailer does hint at a better story than I was anticipating perhaps.

Still, it’s going to be heavy on action and Johnny Depp humor. In fact I still think that the primary reason it was made was for Johnny Depp as Tonto.

The film comes out in July and this is presumably the big final trailer and…

Simply put, “Man Of Steel” looks rather epic—a mix of deep-rooted character development and incredible action that points to full-on war on Earth. Also, Henry Cavill, something of a question mark as he’s never quite impressed, doesn’t seem completely out of place here, thankfully. The world and context of “Man Of Steel” is unfolding, and much like Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” films, it seems to be rooted in a pragmatic reality, with plausible reasons for elements of the Superman cannon to appear while less plausible lore seems to have been jettisoned completely. Joss let loose that his team of Avengers will assemble for filming in February of 2014. Obviously we know that they would have to start filming in 2014 to make a May 2015 release date, but thus far we had not heard a start date for the filming. Now we’re honing in on it. Inquiring minds like to know this stuff.
