We’re Fine Here

Joe and TJ warm up before the big talk of ‘Star Wars’ with a conversation about ‘Warm Bodies’ and TJ’s review of it — TJ is not a big fan, Joe thinks he might just have to see it to see if he agrees with TJ, an R2D2 translator (loads of fun), the ‘Skyfall’ Honest Trailer, the Netflix original series and political drama, ‘House of Cards’, as well as a conversation about Netflix’s full season release strategy, ‘The Avengers’ ‘Firefly’ style opening credits sequence, a few new releases to video on demand, and finally before the big topic, a quick discussion of the highly alliterated title for this run of podcasts, ‘Favorite Fun Futon Films for February’ (say that 10 times fast). And then, TJ and Joe are joined by Linsay Morgan to discuss ‘Star Wars’. And oh do they discuss it. Joe and Linsay think it may be the best film ever made. TJ has reservations. The discussion is lively and fun, you won’t want to miss it!

Joe and TJ talk about Joss Whedon’s wish to do more ‘Firefly’ — which warms a nerd’s heart, Lex Friedman tries to cut the cord and how Cable companies are clinging desperately to the old business model, the SAG Award Winners, and then this little bitty bit of news about J.J. Abrams directing the next ‘Star Wars’ film and what all that means and entails. Then the main topics for this week’s episode are ‘Parker’ and ‘Hansel and Gretel’. Neither TJ nor Joe liked ‘Parker’ very well and there are definite morality issues to consider when your hero is no hero at all but a “principled” thief (whatever that means). ‘Hansel and Gretel’ was a topic of a bit more debate. TJ enjoyed the film but Joseph did not. Catch their thoughts and reviews of this film right here!

FIGHT! In this episode TJ and Joseph disagree on whether ‘Broken City’ was a good film or not. Joseph did not enjoy it very much at all, TJ found it to be pretty good with only more minor grievances. It’s a lively discussion. They also review Gangster Squad, and there is much more agreement on the merits and lesser qualities of this film. Particularly the performances in this film are top notch, as is the visual style and heartfelt story. TJ and Joseph also talk about ‘Man of Steel’s’ Jimmy Olson… as a girl!, ‘Iron Man 3’ coming to IMAX, the Honest Trailer for ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’, the trailer for the upcoming film ‘Emperor’ staring Tommy Lee Jones and Mathew Fox, and a sneak peak at Joe’s review of ‘The Last Stand’ which is really just TJ going on about how bad Arnold Schwarzenegger is at acting. Be sure to tune into the fun!

TJ and Joseph dive in for some good fun and lively discussion. They discuss Jon Polito commenting on a negative review on The New York Times, the news that a ‘Jack Reacher’ Sequel is unlikely, which disappoints TJ, The entire ‘Die Hard’ series coming to theaters for one day only, the White House’s response to a petition for the U.S. to build a Death Star — it’s dead funny regardless of any political leanings, ‘Independence Day 2’ rumors, a Joss Whedon video interview discussing ‘Avengers 2’, and the Jurassic Park IV release date (face palm!). And then for the main topic, they discuss Promised Land starring Matt Damon. The discussion is a lively one, though be prepared, politics are involved (how could they not be) and you may disagree with TJ and Joseph. But that’s okay. It’s a lot of fun, be sure to tune in!

Then the main topic this week is Django Unchained. There was plenty to like and plenty to dislike about the film and TJ and Joseph dive in praising and disparaging the film in equal parts. They have a lot of fun with this one! And then, the big announcement of who won the HD TV giveaway. Be sure to tune in!

TJ and Joseph discuss Ebert’s top ten films of 2012, including ‘Argo’, which Ebert named top of the year, and TJ’s own top ten films of 2012 as well. This involves a little quibbling over the positioning of items on the list as well as if some actually belong there. They also discuss the teaser for the upcoming ‘Monsters University’ which TJ thinks is pretty great and Joseph thinks it is less so. Hansel and Gretel also has some new promotional material out, including a new TV spot which they discuss briefly. And for the main top, TJ and Joseph are joined by Joseph’s wife, Liz, to discuss Les Miserables, the film based on the stage musical. It’s a worthy production, if disappointing in some ares. So they dive deep to discuss likes, dislikes, things that could have been better, and why the story, regardless of the production values and choices of the film, is worth paying attention to.

Tom Cruise Haters

Tom Cruise Haters

In this episode, TJ gives some really brief thoughts on ‘Les Miserables’ (next week’s episode will be all about ‘Les Mis’), and some follow up on last week’s episode pertaining to ‘The Hobbit’, then they talk about GLaDOS’ voice in ‘Pacific Rim’, and a little about the trailer, then they discuss the horrifying idea of Carrie Underwood as Maria in ‘The Sound of Music’ TV remake, as well as a ‘Cars’ spin-off, ‘Planes’ and their fears and trepidations for that upcoming film as well as some general feelings about Pixar and the direction their films have been going. And the main topic this week is ‘Jack Reacher’, the crime/action/thriller featuring Tom Cruise. TJ found it quite enjoyable, Joseph less so, but still rated it positively. They talk likes, dislikes, Tom Cruise’s performance, what could have been done better, and more.

TJ and Joseph are joined by TrekMovie.com founder and editor in chief, Anthony Pascale, to discuss the nine minute prologue debut of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, what we know and don’t know about the film, who the villain ultimately is, how JJ Abrams’ ‘Trek’ is not just for fans, but goes for a broader appeal, which Enterprise is the best, how it’s not just a question of old ‘Trek’ or new ‘Trek’ and more. Lots of nerdery to be had here. Then TJ and Joseph are joined by Clark Douglas, who appeared on episode 14 of ‘The MovieByte Podcast’ with TJ, and new guest Marcus Pittman to discuss ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’. Much discussion is had about the merits as well as the not so good aspects of the film. While all enjoyed the film and ultimately rated it on the positive side of the scale, there were varying degrees of elation and disappointment with the film. This is a fun one, be sure to join the discussion!

Hindsight 2012

Hindsight 2012

TJ and Joseph welcome special guest this week, Melinda Snodgrass, a successful screenwriter, and particularly as pertains to this episode, wrote one of the best ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ episodes in Season 2, ‘The Measure of a Man’. She tells us a lot about the writing process on ‘Star Trek’ and what that was like, and talks particularly about that episode, her love for the character Data, her thoughts on how to better use the cast and crew of the Enterprise, the great character moments in the episode, ‘The Next Generation in HD’ and the extended cut of ‘The Measure of a Man’. It was great fun to talk to her. Then TJ and Joseph briefly review two films they didn’t care much for, ‘Killing them Softly’, and ‘Playing for Keeps’. And finally, they welcome special guest, Michael Minkoff as they talk about gearing up for relaunching the Movieology brand as a podcast on MovieByte, some discussion on the favorite films of 2012 and more.

Join TJ and Joseph as they talk about whether Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be Batman or not, the upcoming remake of ‘Flight of the Navigator’, ‘Revenge of the Sith’ as a great work of art — which leave them scratching their heads, the ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ poster and how much it looks like a rip-off of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ poster, and the Man of Steel’ in hand cuffs? What gives? And then the two main topics of discussion, Rise of the Guardians, and Men in Black 3. They didn’t think very highly of Rise of the Guardians, its convoluted and complicated plot, its confusing message for children, its lack of precision with regards to story and more. And for Men in Black 3, TJ enjoyed it very much while Joseph was pretty neutral on it. They also announce the winner of the “Ratings and Reviews” contest. Be sure to tune in!
