‘Wreck-it Ralph’ Sound Design

‘Wreck-it Ralph’ Sound Design

Here’s another fun one. I really enjoyed the sound design of Wreck-it Ralph, actually I enjoyed the whole film, and certainly the sound design aspect of it. It was appropriately nostalgic at times, and really added to the feel of the film, and it’s retro appeal.

Enjoy.

Ebert Liked ‘Skyfall’

Ebert Liked ‘Skyfall’
Roger Ebert’s Journal

In this 50th year of the James Bond series, with the disappointing “Quantum of Solace” (2008) still in our minds, “Skyfall” triumphantly reinvents 007 in one of the best Bonds ever made. This is a full-blooded, joyous, intelligent celebration of a beloved cultural icon, with Daniel Craig taking full possession of a role he earlier played well in “Casino Royale,” not so well in “Quantum”—although it may not have been entirely his fault. I don’t know what I expected in Bond #23, but certainly not an experience this invigorating.

This film really got Ebert’s attention. I wish I could get…

‘Skyfall’ Killing the Box Office

‘Skyfall’ Killing the Box Office
Film.com

The James Bond franchise celebrated its 50th anniversary in style this weekend, as the 23rd entry in the series, “Skyfall,” absolutely crushed the box office, earning a staggering $87.8 million in its debut weekend.

That amount is not only by far the biggest opening ever for a Bond film, easily dwarfing the $67.5 million brought in by 2008′s “Quantum of Solace,” but combined with vigorous overseas receipts it could already push “Skyfall” over the $500 million mark worldwide.

Well, okay. The film didn’t seem that special to me, but apparently everyone else thinks it’s special. I mean…

Wreck-it Ralph — Review

4 of 5 stars
Wreck-it Ralph

You may not have realized yet what family film Disney had in store for us this holiday season. What with so many sequels released in recent years from their animation studios, it’s easy to overlook the occasional original story they might release. It only occurred to me the other day as I watched the trailers before a showing of Wreck-it Ralph that this is their holiday theatrical release.

With a budget to the tune of $165,000,000 (estimated) it’s more than surprisingly delightful. This first film — in an undoubtedly new movie franchise — has been well-received. It is sure to attract…

Budweiser is not happy with ‘Flight

Budweiser is not happy with ‘Flight
Indie Wire: The Playlist

Anheuser-Busch is requesting that Paramount Pictures “obscure or remove” the Budweiser logo from “Flight.” Of course, Paramount doesn’t have to comply, as filmmakers don’t have to get permission to feature products in their films. And while product placment is routine in Hollywood movies, it’s easy to see why Robert Zemeckis and Co. didn’t bother giving the booze makers a heads-up (“Hey guys, we’re making a movie about an alcoholic, want a six pack in there?!”). But the Budweiser brewers aren’t the only ones furrowing their brow; the dudes over at William Grant & Sons are not pleased…

Flight — Review

3 of 5 stars
Flight

How do you describe Flight in one sentence? Easy, like this: Flight is a film about substance abuse.

Substance Abuse

Question, how do our lead characters in this film even have a liver left? There’s a lot of substance abuse in this film, and in many ways it is a somewhat compelling, if not completely satisfying drama. The drugs and alcohol are not the only adult themes in this film either. The film opens to show us just how depraved Captain Whip Whitaker is by showing him in a bedroom scene with someone named Trina (Katerina Marquez) whom we very soon discover is a flight attendant on…

Did Pixar and Disney Switch Brains?

Did Pixar and Disney Switch Brains?
Film.com

Record scratch noise, what am I talking about? Well, just this, “Brave” — the story of an ancient princess, directed by a crew that had previously worked on “The Prince of Egypt” — was released by Pixar. Meanwhile, Andrew Stanton of Pixar fame was directing a Disney summer tentpole, “John Carter.” This weekend featured “Wreck-It Ralph,” with executive producer John Lasseter right there in the credits, the very fella who built Pixar Animation. Yes indeed, Disney made a film about a video game world where the characters were real (Hi, “Toy Story!”) while Pixar released a movie about a…

‘Cloud Atlas’ is Too Intellectual…

‘Cloud Atlas’ is Too Intellectual…
The Hollywood Reporter

“Of course the U.S. release was disappointing, but it hasn’t changed our release plans,” A Company topper Alexander van Dulmen told THR. “Cloud Atlas has a more intellectual approach and theEuropean audience is more open to movies where you have to think a bit.”

Either that or it was just stupid. But then, maybe I’m just one of those dumb Americans and don’t have any intelectual chops or something.

Whatever. I maintain my opinion on how awful this film is.

Star Trek TNG Season 2 Theater Event

Star Trek TNG Season 2 Theater Event
TrekNews.net

On Thursday, November 29th selected cinemas across the US and Canada will present two remastered episodes of TNG. The episodes include “Q Who” and the world premiere of the extended cut of “The Measure of a Man”, which will include an additional 13 minutes of footage.

I’m thinking about going to this just for the fun of it. Season 2 may have only been marginally better than season 1 (I believe I have said before on this site that TNG didn’t really start cranking out good episodes consistently until season 3), but the two they picked for this event are pretty fantastic and I would love…
