Dean Devlin on the ‘Stargate’ Reboot

Dean Devlin on the ‘Stargate’ Reboot
Darren — GateWorld

Devlin hinted at what form the nextStargate movie may take, hinting that perhaps it may retell the story of the Gate’s discovery.

“Twenty years later, we can’t really do part two,” he said. “We have to start over from the beginning. So let’s reboot the series, put in all the things we couldn’t the first time, and set it up properly.”

Translation: We didn’t really get to do what we wanted to do with the original movie, or finish our trilogy. We know that there’s a lot of work out there since our movie, but we don’t like it and don’t want anything to do with it. We know there’s a big…

Rian Johnson Just Announced as the Next Star Wars Director

Rian Johnson Just Announced as the Next Star Wars Director
Drew McWeeny — HitFix

Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams, is deep into production. It’s scheduled for a December 2015 release, which leaves little time in production years to complete one of the greatest film epics of our time. J.J.’s is a monumental assignment.

But if that were not enough, Disney and Lucasfilm have publicly declared they will release another Star Wars film every year for the foreseeable future. That means Star Wars: Episode VIII must be scripted at this very moment, or very close to it. That gives them 1.4 years to finish Abrams’ and 2.5 years to make the sequel from… Read The Rest

Disney Made $40.9 Billion in 2013 Merchandise

Disney Made $40.9 Billion in 2013 Merchandise
Kevin Melrose — HitFix

Disney is making good money these days and it’s primarily from merchandising. Ahead of the release of upcoming Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar films, they release memorabilia that can be found at nearly any and all retail outlets known to America. If you have shopped at a Disney store in the mall, then you know that they really need to expand their square footage just to make room for their newer properties.

2011, 2012, and 2013 were great sales years, and 2014 is nearly a done deal. It will be a good year for Disney products, as the sales have grown year over year. Snatching up Marvel…

‘Scooby-Doo’ Live Action Reboot

‘Scooby-Doo’ Live Action Reboot
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

There was once a time when Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini were deemed the right fit for a “Scooby-Doo” live action reboot. The results were actually pretty good (financially anyway), with the movie taking over $275 million worldwide. But by the time “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” came around (both movies penned by “Guardians Of The Galaxy” director James Gunn, FYI), audience interest had cooled, and the sequel committed the cardinal sin of earning less than its predecessor. And thus a movie franchise was dead. At least until now.

Warner…

Marvel Considering Another ‘Hulk’ Film

Marvel Considering Another ‘Hulk’ Film
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

It would seem the tide is shifting on Marvel’s feelings about making a new, standalone Hulk movie. The character — one they’ve tried twice before to make into a viable standalone franchise — has perhaps never been more popular thanks to Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of the green monster in “The Avengers.” And while that led to a flurry of fanboys begging for a new Hulk movie, as of last year Ruffalo revealed that Marvel had “no plans” to make that happen. And even Marvel’s guru Joss Whedon said it’s “the most difficult Marvel property.” But the character is a popular one, stopping by recently…

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Is Set In 1983

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Is Set In 1983
Oliver Lyttelton — The Playlist

“X-Men: Days Of Future Past” did what it was intended to: thanks to the all-star cast and surprisingly strong reviews, the film was by far the biggest hit of the series, with the film closing on $700 million worldwide, elevating it far above its predecessors, and justifying Fox’s decision to spend more money on the picture than any other film except “Avatar.” As such, the already-announced plans for “X-Men: Apocalypse” are moving forward at speed, and writerSimon Kinberg has just spilled some beans on it.

I just have to stop the quote and talk about how good it is to see X-Men back, and…

Sony Acquires ‘Captain Nemo’ Script

Sony Acquires ‘Captain Nemo’ Script
Germain Lussier — Film

While the odds of ever getting to see a David Fincher version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are now slim to none, an alternate version of the tale has just been purchased. Sony Pictures has purchased a spec script called Captain Nemo, written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The pair are best known for co-creating the hit Superman show Smallville, but also worked on the scripts for films such as Spider-Man 2(the good one, from Sam Raimi), Shanghai Noon and I Am Number Four.

I’m interested in this, but the problem is that this is a beloved book from my childhood and making it in a way…

Ford was at Pinewood studios in England when a hydraulic door reportedly fell down and hit him, possibly fracturing his ankle.

Hey, that’s not good! We need you, Han!

‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Coming To A Theater Near You
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

As we’ve discussed before, turning a popular video game into a halfway decent movie tends to be a hit or (mostly) miss affair in Hollywood. Nintendo franchise “Super Mario Brothers” probably still has the trophy for being a shining example of how wrong things can get, but even this year’s “Need For Speed” showed that there can be a disconnect between the button-mashing audience and those that buy tickets for the multiplex. But nevertheless, Sony is undaunted by the challenge because they are bringing one of the most iconic video game characters ever to the big screen.

Deadline reports that…

Alamo Drafthouse Bans Google Glass

Alamo Drafthouse Bans Google Glass
Angie Han — /Film

Add Google Glass to the Alamo Drafthouse‘s long list of no-nos. The Texas-based chain has officially banned the wearable devices in auditoriums “once lights dim for trailers.” While many of its rules are designed to minimize distractions for all moviegoers, CEO Tim Leaguesays the Google Glass ban has to do with piracy issues.

I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this one. In general, I do love the Alamo Drafthouse’s no tollerance policy on talking, texting, etc. during films. But this feels a little different. I’m not planning on having Google Glass. Ever. But I do think it’s a…
