James Cameron Ups ‘Avatar’ Sequel Count to Three
Mike Fleming, Jr. - Deadline Hollywood

The planned two sequels to James Cameron’s highly successful 2009 film Avatar have now become three sequels, announces Deadline Hollywood. The three sequels will be shot at the same time, with Avatar 2 set for release in December 2016.

Commented Cameron: “Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that Avatar’s world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen.…

‘Pacific Rim’ Does Well in China, Sequel Now Likely
Nikki Finke - Deadline

I’ve just learned that momentum is building for a Pacific Rim sequel based on the international box office for the Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros summer tentpole. The latest development is the 3D sci-fi actioner’s Wednesday opening in China to a record-breaking $9M from an estimated 5,700 digital 3D screens, 117 digital 3D IMAX screens, and 22 China Giant Screen sites. That’s a new high for any Warner Bros release and 23% bigger than for any Harry Potter film including 3D Harry Potter 7BPacific Rim grossed a huge 70% of the Top Five market share there. This is after the pic broke through…

David Lieberman - Deadline

NBCUniversal chief Steve Burke made his observations this morning in Comcast‘s Q2 conference call with analysts as he discussed his company’s approach to films following its new production and finance partnership with Legendary Entertainment. Burke noted that NBCU is delighted with its animation alliance with Illumination. The partners’ Despicable Me 2 will become “the single most profitable film in the 100 year history of Universal Studios.”

That’s just sad. What is the world coming to?

Arnold Schwarzenegger to Make 3 More Conan Films

Arnold Schwarzenegger to Make 3 More Conan Films
George Wales - TotalFilm

Arnold Schwarzenegger has previously mentioned that a new Conan The Barbarian movie is on his agenda, but apparently, that film might be the first of three.

That’s according to Fredrik Malmberg, CEO of Paradox Entertainment, the current holders of the rights to the Conan franchise…

“We have a great story,” says Malmberg. “Everyone loves it. This is a role that’s perfect for [Arnold] and he’s very involved with the whole Universal team. It’s the best team they have. Arnold has been very instrumental to bringing this together saying, ‘We gotta make a good Conan!’”

“I think if we do this…

Eddie Murphy in ‘Beverly Hills Cop 4’ - I think I Just Died

Eddie Murphy in ‘Beverly Hills Cop 4’ - I think I Just Died
Kevin Jagernauth - The Playlist

Late last week you might have missed the news that the “Beverly Hills Cop” TV pilot wasn’t picked up — despite it testing apparently very, very well — but that the gears were turning once again on a new movie, thanks to the response to the TV show. This is no mere idle chatter, as Paramount are once again turning the gears on what we presume will be “Beverly Hills Cop 4,” and they’ve rounded up the star and some writers to making it happen.

Yes, at 52 years old, Eddie Murphy will still be working the beat as he’s now attached to the new “Beverly Hills Cop” movie, which will get a fresh…

‘Episode VII’ — Story and Character More Important Than Effects

‘Episode VII’ — Story and Character More Important Than Effects
Daniel Krupa - IGN

Executive producer Kathleen Kennedy has given an update on the production of Episode VII at Star Wars Celebration Europe.

Kennedy revealed she is currently dividing her time between Lucasfilm – where she’s sat in George’s old office, by the way – and Bad Robot, where she’s busy having extensive story meetings with J.J. Abrams and the rest of the writing team, including Empire Strikes Back scribe Lawrence Kasdan. And that emphasis on story and character came up repeatedly during today’s panel, hosted by Warwick Davis.

“The story and characters are all we’re talking about right now,” said…

‘The Starving Games’ — ‘Hunger Games’ Spoof

‘The Starving Games’ — ‘Hunger Games’ Spoof
Jen Yamato - Deadline

Spoofmeisters Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Date Movie) will be back with more pop culture parodying this fall, thanks to Ketchup Entertainment. The financing firm and newbie distributors have acquired Hunger Games satireThe Starving Games for a November 8 theatrical release. Timing puts the Friedberg/Seltzer comedy in theaters just ahead of Lionsgate‘s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which debuts November 22.

Hmm, that doesn’t sound at all interesting to me and maybe just a bit irritating. The reason being of course is that I love this franchise and making…

John Williams Officially Returning to Score New ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy

John Williams Officially Returning to Score New ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy

Legendary film composer (and personal favorite) John Williams has officially confirmed his involvement in the new Star Wars trilogy, with the first entry being directed by JJ Abrams and premiering in 2015!

In a video posted on the official Star Wars YouTube channel, 81-year-old Williams talks about how he has always loved composing the scores for these films and how he still feels like he’s in the “galaxy far, far away.” I must admit that, while I knew that he would compose the score for Episode VII, I was willing to bet money that Abrams’ regular collaborator, Michael Giacchino, would take…

Jon M. Chu talks ‘G.I. Joe 3’
Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub - Collider

With G.I. Joe: Retaliation now available on VOD and hitting Blu-ray/DVD next week, I was able to sit down with director Jon M. Chu last weekend for an exclusive video interview.  However, with Chu returning to direct G.I. Joe 3, I used a lot of my time talking about the next installment and what fans can expect.  Some of the highlights he told me were:

  • Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson are returning.
  • The release date is still being figured out.
  • Regarding the script, they’re currently “narrowing down the writer.”
  • On Retaliation, they learned that fans were okay with stretching things a…
