Listen NowTJ and Joseph after ‘The MovieByte Podcast’ Episode 29.
Listen NowJoe and TJ talk about Joss Whedon’s wish to do more ‘Firefly’ — which warms a nerd’s heart, Lex Friedman tries to cut the cord and how Cable companies are clinging desperately to the old business model, the SAG Award Winners, and then this little bitty bit of news about J.J. Abrams directing the next ‘Star Wars’ film and what all that means and entails. Then the main topics for this week’s episode are ‘Parker’ and ‘Hansel and Gretel’. Neither TJ nor Joe liked ‘Parker’ very well and there are definite morality issues to consider when your hero is no hero at all but a “principled” thief (whatever that means). ‘Hansel and Gretel’ was a topic of a bit more debate. TJ enjoyed the film but Joseph did not. Catch their thoughts and reviews of this film right here!
Listen NowDid you know that July 15 will mark the 25th anniversary of the releast of the original Die Hard? Well neither did I until just now. And in honor of that fact, Fox has released the 25th Anniversary Die Hard Collection on Blu-ray. The set has quite a few bonus features I’m given to undersand, including one called Bad to the Bone and I’ve got a sample of that one for you.
Personally, Alan Rickman’s Hans Gruber is still the best but Jeremy Irons takes a close second.
This actually looks pretty good.
When the White House (Secret Service Code: “Olympus”) is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As our national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning’s inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President, and avert an even bigger disaster.
Read The RestIn November, a journalist asked J.J. Abrams what seemed like an obvious question: Was he interested in directing the next Star Wars movie? Disney had just paid a whopping $4.05 billion to acquire George Lucas’ iconic Lucasfilm and had stated its intention to turn out new Star Wars films every two to three years beginning in 2015. The prolific Abrams, who had sparked the flagging Star Trek series in 2009, seemed a natural fit. But he quickly shot the idea down. While Star Wars was “the first movie that blew my mind in that way,” he said then, he wanted to focus on original…
Am I the only one on the planet that did not like this short? I think I may be judging from the gushing praise everyone has been pouring out on it since it debuted, and again now that it has come out online.
I thought it started out great, and I was really loving the whole thing with the guy trying to get the girl’s attention with the paper airplanes. Then it just got really weird and completely ruined it. It was as if there was cleverness and fun, and then they ran out of brainstorm and said, hey, let’s just have all those airplanes pull the couple together at the same place of their own…
Read The RestRead The RestBut under the direction of journeyman filmmaker Taylor Hackford, who is an underrated visual stylist and has done everything from the top tier Stephen King adaptation “Dolores Claiborne” and lawyerly monster mash “The Devil’s Advocate” to earnest ‘80s tearjerkers like “An Officer and a Gentlemen” and “Against All Odds” to the Oscar honored “Ray,” “Parker” totally sags. It’s a visual muddle, indistinguishable from your average low-budget cop show and lacking in any kind of flair or dynamism (save for some “Panic Room”-ish title cards), which it should absolutely indulge in since in crime…
Father Parker, as we are introduced to him during his first robbery of the movie, is quite a devout criminal… with principles.
“Don’t steal from people that can’t afford it,” Parker tells us. “Don’t hurt people that don’t deserve it. …Most importantly, if you say you will do something and you don’t, I will make sure you regret it.”
What seems like a heavy-handed spin of the good-bad guy theme that’s popular in cult action films these days only get’s more ridiculous when Parker dawns a white ten-gallon cowboy hat and chases down the thugs that left him for dead to steal back what was…
Read The ReviewHey look, it’s another “Renner has a Boom Stick” film.
This one is a twist on a familiar fairytale, but for the most part you won’t recognize it. At first you might recognize elements of the original fairytale, with a few minor differences. But that’s just used as a backstory for the real tale of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
While this story is squarely placed in the magical world of fantasy, it bears little resemblance to recent, highly rated fantasy films such as popular Marvel titles Thor, Captain America, The Avengers and the like. Or perhaps a more apt comparison would be to…
