Kathleen Kennedy Persuades J.J.

Kathleen Kennedy Persuades J.J.
The Hollywood Reporter

In November, a journalist asked J.J. Abrams what seemed like an obvious question: Was he interested in directing the next Star Wars movie? Disney had just paid a whopping $4.05 billion to acquire George Lucas’ iconic Lucasfilm and had stated its intention to turn out new Star Wars films every two to three years beginning in 2015. The prolific Abrams, who had sparked the flagging Star Trek series in 2009, seemed a natural fit. But he quickly shot the idea down. While Star Wars was “the first movie that blew my mind in that way,” he said then, he wanted to focus on original…

‘Paperman’ Short

‘Paperman’ Short

Am I the only one on the planet that did not like this short? I think I may be judging from the gushing praise everyone has been pouring out on it since it debuted, and again now that it has come out online.

I thought it started out great, and I was really loving the whole thing with the guy trying to get the girl’s attention with the paper airplanes. Then it just got really weird and completely ruined it. It was as if there was cleverness and fun, and then they ran out of brainstorm and said, hey, let’s just have all those airplanes pull the couple together at the same place of their own…

The Playlist Reviews ‘Parker’

The Playlist Reviews ‘Parker’
The Playlist

But under the direction of journeyman filmmaker Taylor Hackford, who is an underrated visual stylist and has done everything from the top tier Stephen King adaptation “Dolores Claiborne” and lawyerly monster mash “The Devil’s Advocate” to earnest ‘80s tearjerkers like “An Officer and a Gentlemen” and “Against All Odds” to the Oscar honored “Ray,” “Parker” totally sags. It’s a visual muddle, indistinguishable from your average low-budget cop show and lacking in any kind of flair or dynamism (save for some “Panic Room”-ish title cards), which it should absolutely indulge in since in crime…

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters — Review

3 of 5 stars
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Hey look, it’s another “Renner has a Boom Stick” film.

This one is a twist on a familiar fairytale, but for the most part you won’t recognize it. At first you might recognize elements of the original fairytale, with a few minor differences. But that’s just used as a backstory for the real tale of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

While this story is squarely placed in the magical world of fantasy, it bears little resemblance to recent, highly rated fantasy films such as popular Marvel titles ThorCaptain AmericaThe Avengers and the like. Or perhaps a more apt comparison would be to…

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Featurette

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Featurette

There’s not really anything new here, but this is Star Trek and I’m a Star Trek nerd (card carrying member) so I have to post it.

J.J. and a couple of the cast members talking about upping the ante and the like. J.J. thinks its the biggest things he’s done.

Well, this is a bit random, and leaves some questions to be answered but given the general lockdown surrounding anything involving Christopher Nolan, we’ll take what we can get at this point.

The first offiical image of Amy Adams as Lois Lane in “Man Of Steel” has arrived. No, we don’t know why the image, courtesy of Desde Hollywood is in black-and-white, but it does seem as if the Daily Planet has been outfitted with iPads. Will some of Zack Snyder’s film dip into black-and-white sections or if this just a bizarre decision on behalf of the international marketing team behind the…

‘The Heat’ Moves to Summer

‘The Heat’ Moves to Summer
/Film

Fox has already put out a couple of very funny trailers for Paul Feig‘s The Heat, but you’ll want to hold your laughter for now. The picture has just been pushed back from April 5 to June 28, where it’ll face off against Universal’s Kick-Ass 2 and Columbia’s White House Down. That slot has traditionally been a good one for comedies; high grossers likeTedBad Teacher, and Grown Ups have all opened on that same weekend in recent years. The studio has already made it clear that it likes what Feig has delivered, so this date comes across as a vote of confidence.

Raise your hand if you…

Lex Friedman Tries to Cut the Cord

Lex Friedman Tries to Cut the Cord
MacWorld

When the rep came back on the line, she proposed keeping Boost Plus in place but waiving that fee; and upgrading our channel lineup to include the aforementioned movie channels, along with more kids channels and other stations. All at a monthly rate of $90. The entire rate, she said, would be good for one year.

In other words, my cable company’s proposal was this: Instead of me canceling my cable, they’d give me many more channels and have me spend more than $60 less per month than what I’d been paying. The monthly rate of $90, in fact, meant that at this point in the phone call, it…
