Evolution of the Enterprise

Evolution of the Enterprise

If you will indulge my geeky side a moment. I know a few of you don’t like the Star Trek stuff, so if you are one of those, feel free to skip over this. I could not resist.

Though the style of this video with the over the top announcery voiceover is a little pompous and self important, I found this video to be really fun for the geek in me, showing the evolution of the Enterprise through out the Star Trek timeline (except for the new timeline of the JJ Abrams films).

The description on YouTube says this was taken from the Star Trek: Enterprise DVD Extras so you might want to watch…

‘Monsters University’ Ad

‘Monsters University’ Ad

Pixar is so good at this stuff. In this sequel to Monsters Inc. the kiddos are going to college to learn how to square children and such. It’s a fun concept, and provides the really fun opportunity for ads like this.

I always think back to the awesome marketing for Toy Story 3, such as the Google Search Ad. It’s really great marketing, and though completely different in some ways, this ad for Monsters University is similar in that it’s not directly advertising the upcoming film, but it sure is getting you fired up for it.

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but…

TJ’s Movie Picks of 2012

TJ’s Movie Picks of 2012

Happy New Year! It seems to be a bit of a slow news morning. Maybe some more news and links will show up later today, but since I have to drive ten hours back home from visiting relatives today, I’m going to be unavailable if stuff turns up. And Joseph, well he’s still out partying up the new year or something so it’s up to me to give you guys something.

I thought it would be fun to round up my top ten films from 2012. Though in my various reviews perhaps I may have rated one or two films more highly than what I list here, I think these are the films worthy of mentioning for 2012. I hope…

Interview with Ming Na About ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Interview with Ming Na About ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Ming-Na Wen Talks the new S.H.I.E.L.D. televisions show, The Avengers director Joss Whedon, the Marvel Universe and about how the show will not stick with normal comic canon with AMC Theatres.

Fun stuff. Still really looking forward to this show. Joss Whedon rarely disappoints! And though I know this may be blasphemy to some, I’m glad to hear they won’t be sticking too closely to any comics. The best comic adaptations to the screen have strayed pretty far. I think it’s because the comic book format just doesn’t translate well to the screen.

‘Skyfall’ Passed $1 Billion Worldwide
Entertainment Weekly

It’s official — we have reached the era of the billion dollar Bond!

Sony announced today that Skyfall has surpassed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, becoming just the 14th film in history to reach the coveted milestone.

The 23rd entry in the James Bond series has shattered every record in the franchise’s 50-year history. Skyfall, which was produced by MGM, EON Productions, and Sony for $200 million, has earned $289.6 million in North America alone (including $4.6 million this weekend), clobbering the domestic record set by Quantum of Solace, which earned $168.4 million in…

Science Analysis of ‘Into Darkness’ Preview

Science Analysis of ‘Into Darkness’ Preview
TrekMovie.com

On December 14th a 9-minute preview of Star Trek Into Darkness premiered with IMAX 3D screenings of The Hobbit. TrekMovie was quick to publish early impressions along with a later (more spoilery) detailed review on release day. But, was any of it scientifically realistic? Today Science Saturday is dedicated to an in-depth look beyond what we saw on the screen. Get your tricorder ready, and reverse the polarity of the warp nacelles; it’s time for a science diagnostic of the Into Darkness IMAX preview.

This is a really fun read. I really love stuff like this. It’s fun to speculate about…

‘Vehicle 19’ Trailer

‘Vehicle 19’ Trailer

This could be fun if it’s not just one long car chase. The trailer is certainly emphasizing all the car chasing, and I don’t mind a little of that as long as it’s not the whole film.

A recently paroled man unwittingly picks up the wrong vehicle, having just got off a long haul flight. He soon realizes that he is the target of an entire police force that will use any means necessary to stop him and the tied-up female “passenger” he discovers in the trunk, from getting to the courthouse to testify against top-to-bottom corruption.

The $250 million Warner Bros. release grossed an estimated $10.7 million on Friday, putting it on pace for a $31 million weekend, which would bring its total to about $221 million and lift its worldwide cume past $600 million.

In second place, Django Unchained continued its terrific opening week, bringing in another $9.7 million. By weekend’s end, the R-rated Western will have earned about $27 million more, giving it a six-day total of $60 million. Based on…

There is something interesting about this film. I love a good drama, although I am concerned about what propaganda may be in this film. But I will certainly give it a chance. I’m not sure when I personally will get to see it, but you can be sure I will.

Ebert Names ‘Argo’ Best Film of 2012

Ebert Names ‘Argo’ Best Film of 2012
Roger Ebert’s Journal

The good news is that I’ve seen the films of one of the best recent years in cinema. I wrote more than 300 reviews in 2012—a record—and it was unusually difficult to leave out many of the quote-unquote “best” films in 11th place.

Here are the Best Films I saw in 2012:

1. • “Argo”

Though not my personal top film, it is well deserved. Argo is a fine film and I have no problem with it being names the top film of 2012.

Of course as usual, some of the films on this list I either haven’t heard of, or didn’t feel like it deserved the time of day. But that’s Ebert for you.
