‘The Other Woman’ Overwhelms ‘Captain America’

‘The Other Woman’ Overwhelms ‘Captain America’
Anthony Breznican — Entertainment Weekly

The threesome of Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, and Kate Upton proved to be too much for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Fox’s raunchy girlfriends comedy, about two mistresses who team up with a man’s insecure wife to ruin his life and rediscover theirs, earned $24.7 million to bump the Marvel superhero from his three-week box office run at No. 1.

It was a surprisingly high number for The Other Woman, given that some analysts speculated the movie would do about half that by appealing strictly to female moviegoers. Given Diaz’s comedy track record with everything from There’s Something…

Joss Whedon Is Having Fun With Ultron

Joss Whedon Is Having Fun With Ultron
Jesse Giroux — JoBlo

Whedon starts by saying the new characters in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON like Baron Von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann), Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) serve a purpose, and are necessary for the story he is trying to tell.

I fiercely dislike the idea of just throwing in more people for the sake of doing that. But last time I had all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict.

The director continues by saying he’s having a lot of fun with James Spader‘s Ultron.

I’m having a blast with Ultron. He’s not a…

Ray Fisher Cast as Cyborg in ‘Batman Vs. Superman’

Ray Fisher Cast as Cyborg in ‘Batman Vs. Superman’
Russ Fischer — /Film

The potential Justice League roster just expanded by one in Zack Snyder‘s new vision of the DC Universe. Theater actor Ray Fisher (not the football player) has been cast as Cyborg in Batman vs. Superman. Since Fisher just played Muhammed Ali in a play staged in New York, he should have the chops to sign on as Cyborg.

Variety reports that the character won’t have a large role in the film, but his role could expand as Warner Bros. preps more DC Universe films. That raises more questions than it answers, really. Variety says “[Cyborg] will become a much more significant role as Warner and D.C.…

Re-run — What To See This Weekend

Re-run — What To See This Weekend

Can you believe there’s not a single new film I feel like is worth mentioning this week? I guess I chose a good week to take off of podcasting (and don’t worry, we’ll be back next week with some special guests to talk about Noah).

Still In Theaters

Captain America: The Winter Soldier — PG-13

I have a very soft spot in my heart for Captain America: The First Avengers. A lot of people complain that it only existed to set up The Avengers but I find that to be quite disingenuous. Yes, the ending leaves you hanging slightly because, duh, it is certainly a lead in to The Avengers. But it is so…

Not bad, and well deserved.

HBO Gets Cozy With Amazon

HBO Gets Cozy With Amazon
Chris Welch — The Verge

Amazon and HBO have signed an extensive, multi-year agreement that will bring many of the premium channel’s greatest shows including The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, and The Wire to Amazon Prime Instant Video. The deal also includes “early” seasons of Boardwalk Empire and True Blood. Newer shows like Girls, The Newsroom and Veep will eventually be made available to Prime subscribers, but not until three years after they’ve first aired on HBO. And other hits like Game of Thrones aren’t even mentioned as part of the deal, so HBO may be holding at least some popular content away from Amazon’s…

‘Star Wars VII’ Budget Around $200 Million — George Lucas Consulting
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

“We actually don’t even have the completed budget yet. But it will be in that range. These large, tentpole kinds of movies, on the expensive side, are in the neighborhood of $175-200 million, that kind of a number — some are more, some are less,” Horn shared. “We need to give the audience, essentially, a full meal in return for their affection and devotion and love for these properties.”

And who better to ensure that the audience gets what it wants/deserves than George Lucas? Even though he soldLucasfilm to Disney for billions and has said repeatedly he’s retired, Horn reveals he’s still…
