Man Shot at Florida Theater for Texting

Man Shot at Florida Theater for Texting
Entertainment Weekly

Pasco County Sheriff’s officials say Reeves initially asked Oulson to stop texting at the theater in Wesley Chapel, a suburb about a half-hour north of downtown Tampa.

Sheriff’s Detective Allen Proctor wrote that Reeves spoke to Oulson during the movie previews, then got up from his seat and informed management.

When Reeves returned to his seat “additional words were exchanged” and Oulson threw a bag of popcorn at Reeves, the report said.

After officers read him his rights, Reeves told the detective that Oulson struck him in the face with an unknown object, and that’s when he removed a…

Surprising Musical Origins of the ‘Star Trek’ Theme Song

Surprising Musical Origins of the ‘Star Trek’ Theme Song

There must be some sort of rift in the space time continuum for something like this to occur! As a big fan of Star Trek I did find this fun and fascinating, although I believe you will too whether you are or not. Actually, even though I’m a fan of Star Trek, I’m not a huge fan of Alexander Courage’s main them. But I do like the part that plays over Shatner’s monolog very much. And that’s the part in play here. Check it out.

Gravity Returns to Theaters
Dave Trumbore — Colider.com

After winning a Golden Globe for Best Director, Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity will be returning to theaters this weekend. In case you missed the buzz-worthy sci-fi thriller, you’ll now be able to experience it on the big screen.  It’s no coincidence that the 86th Annual Academy Awards’ nominations list will be unveiled this Thursday either.  As Adam has expressed in his Oscar Beat column, Gravity, its director, and star Sandra Bullock will likely be up for some major awards.

That’s right folks, the best movie of 2013 is coming back to theaters because, well, it deserves it! If for some reason…

Rumor that ‘Batman Vs. Superman’ Could Tie In to ‘Justice League’

Rumor that ‘Batman Vs. Superman’ Could Tie In to ‘Justice League’
Germain Lussier — /Film

A new rumor is circulating that could explain the number of superheroes potentially showing up in Batman vs. Superman. We know for sure Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman will be in the Zack Snyder sequel, set for release July 17, 2015. We’ve also heard wild rumors of other superheroes, such as Green Lantern, Flash and Aquaman, possibly popping up in the film. Whether those rumors are true or not, the addition of Wonder Woman alone has fans worried Snyder’s film will bite off more than it can chew.

Well the new rumor is Batman vs. Superman will end on a huge tease for a Justice League movie,…

Michael Douglas Will Play Hank Pym in Marvel’s ‘Ant Man’

Michael Douglas Will Play Hank Pym in Marvel’s ‘Ant Man’
Russ Fischer — /Film

Word has just hit that Michael Douglas, fresh from his Golden Globe win for Behind the Candelabra, will be in Edgar Wright‘s Ant-Man. He’ll be the first Ant-Man, Henry “Hank” Pym. That pegs Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, who becomes Ant-Man after stealing Pym’s tech.

Marvel confirms those details. (Variety, in a story that has since been changed, said Douglas is the villain in the film, without naming his character. That’s an interesting clash of info, but likely just an error on the trade’s part.)

Well okay then.

Why Armond White Was Kicked Out of the New York Film Critics Circle

Why Armond White Was Kicked Out of the New York Film Critics Circle
Owen Gleiberman — Entertainment Weekly

This morning, the members of the New York Film Critics Circle, including me, voted to expel Armond White, the former critic of the now-defunct New York Press (and currently the editor and movie critic of CityArts), from the group. To me, it was a sad moment — pathetic, really, though Armond brought it on himself. A week ago, at the Circle’s annual awards dinner, White made a rude and bellicose spectacle of himself, as he did the year before, by heckling one of the winners — in this case, Steve McQueen, the director of 12 Years a Slave, a movie that White, in his review, had dismissed as…

Saving Mr. Banks — Review

4 of 5 stars
Saving Mr. Banks

Let me be clear from the outset, I enjoyed this film quite a bit. That said, I feel like I would have enjoyed it better if I actually liked Disney’s Mary Poppins. As it is I really do not like Disney’s classic film that much. While P.L. Travers’ concerns and complaints about the film may be too far reaching and come from a bit too dour of an attitude, I tend to agree with her underlying issues regarding Disney’s version of the film. It’s too goofy, doesn’t make a lot of sense, has no coherent story, and doesn’t drive its point home. If the whole point of the Mary Poppins story is the saving…

‘Catching Fire’ Topples ‘Iron Man 3’

‘Catching Fire’ Topples ‘Iron Man 3’
Jeff Labrecque — Entertainment Weekly

Iron Man 3 had the year’s biggest opening weekend and dominated the summer box office, but when the dust eventually settles on 2013, Catching Fire will go down as the year’s biggest smash. The second film in the Hunger Games franchise, based on Suzanne Collins’ book trilogy, inched past Marvel’s superhero movie on Jan. 9 and now holds the top spot with $409.4 million.

Combined with the original Hunger Games, which grossed $408.0 million in 2012, the Lionsgate films became the first franchise whose initial two installments each topped the $400 million barrier. In addition, Catching Fire has…

‘Lone Survivor’ Takes Top Box Office Spot

‘Lone Survivor’ Takes Top Box Office Spot
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

Here’s a lesson Hollywood might want to consider: Peter Berg’s “Battleship” cost over $200 million and took $25 million on its opening weekend. By contrast, the tough adult war thriller “Lone Survivor” cost $40 million, and almost made up its budget this weekend earning $38 million and taking the number one slot.

Shocker…

And I must apologize, somehow I’ve missed listing this film in my What to See articles. I’m blaming the holiday befuddlement.

‘Jack Ryan’ New Clip and 2 New Featurettes

‘Jack Ryan’ New Clip and 2 New Featurettes

I’m still not entirely pleased with the fact that Jack Ryan has been changed from a CIA analyst that gets thrust into crazy situations, into secret agent that seeks them out, but whatever. We’ve got to keep the story fresh and changed up for a modern audience — or something. I guess my problem is Jack Ryan is not Jason Bourne, but someone forgot to tell the script writers and/or directory Kenneth Branagh.

Still, I hope it’s worth something. One of my problems with the previous Jack Ryan films as a franchise is they were not cohesive. Only two of the four films featured the same actor as Jack…
