‘Into Darkness’ Performing Well Overseas

‘Into Darkness’ Performing Well Overseas
Amy Kaufman - Los Angeles Times

While the USS Enterprise has yet to conquer foreign galaxies, it is starting to pick up speed overseas.

Playing in seven foreign markets this weekend, J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek Into Darkness” collected $31.7 million, according to an estimate from distributor Paramount Pictures. The studio said the sequel performed about 70% better than the original did when it debuted in those same countries four years ago. The movie did well in locations like Germany and Australia but fared best in the United Kingdom, where it grossed $13.3 million.

The movie needs to fare well abroad if it is to…

Unknown Pixar Sequel in Development

Unknown Pixar Sequel in Development
Germain Lussier - /Film

Last week, Disney CEO Bob Iger did a conference call with shareholders and one small piece of information he mentioned has yet to be discussed. Iger said that, over the next five years, Pixar has “fantastic original stories as well as some great sequels to their previous hits.” That’s “sequels,” plural, meaning there must be at least one more beyond Finding Dory. Read the full quote and speculate below.

I worry about Pixar because they seem to be getting “sequel-itis”, but at the same time, Iger did say they have “fantastic original stories” in development in addition to the sequels so…

Conspiracy Theorists Want to Know What S.H.I.E.L.D. Is

Conspiracy Theorists Want to Know What S.H.I.E.L.D. Is
Rising Tide

Who is s.H.I.E.L.D.? What are they hiding? Super-powers are real. Aliens exist. What else is out there? We will uncover the truth. We will not remain silent any longer.

So this is some fun viral marketing for the upcoming TV show Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. This site is supposed to be a group of conspiracy theorists who believe they have compelling evidence that S.H.I.E.L.D. is a thing and they will stop at nothing to discover the truth (as you do).

Who knows exactly how — if at all — this plays into the show, but it’s fun none-the-less.

Here are the videos they have posted to…

Arrested Development Season 4 Trailer

Arrested Development Season 4 Trailer

I know absolutely nothing about Arrested Development, but I’m posting this trailer because the story of how a season 4 has come to be is interesting. Until now it has practically been unheard of for a TV show to return after being canceled for several years. And yet, here we are, and Netflix is just breaking all the rules. It is definitely a very interesting phenomenon. What is especially interesting is that they were able to get the band back together. One of the most prominent reasons (at least the reasons given to us) why it is so hard to ever put a series back together is that getting…

Reminder/Announcement: Live Broadcast on Tuesday at 7:30 PM

Reminder/Announcement: Live Broadcast on Tuesday at 7:30 PM

If you listened to last week’s episode of The MovieByte Podcast, you will hopefully have noted that the live broadcast of this week’s episode will be tomorrow at 7:30 PM Central Time (rather than the normal time on Wednesday) because I’ll be in the theater on Wednesday night seeing Star Trek, and Joe is out of town on vacation and would therefore not be able to do the podcast with a guest at the regular time. It is I who have to bring in a guest and I have to do it a day early. If you did not get a chance to listen to last week’s episode, or simply did not catch that fact toward the end of…

Dose of ‘Star Trek’ Goodies

Dose of ‘Star Trek’ Goodies

Ready for what is now your near daily dose of Star Trek goodies?

Star Trek Into Darkness premieres domestically this week (is it Wednesday yet?), Wednesday night in IMAX, and Thursday night in theaters everywhere. I’ll be firmly planted in the seat of my nearest IMAX theater Wednesday at 8:00 PM, and if you follow me on Twitter, I’ll probably tweet my first impressions right after the show.

Interview with John Cho (New Sulu)

As far as goodies today, first up is an interview with “new Sulu”, John Cho on StarTrek.com.

John Cho had big shoes to fill on Star Trek (2009), assuming the…

ABC Picks Up ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ - With Promo

ABC Picks Up ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ - With Promo
Nellie Andreeva - Deadline

When all was said and done tonight, ABC picked up a total of 12 new series — seven dramas and five comedies. All comedies are single-camera as ABC passed on both of its multi-camera pilots. Here is how it all came down today as the network opened the pickup process with one Disney-friendly shoo-in pilot, Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D., and closed it with another, the Once Upon A Time spinoff.

Never really any doubt with the momentum behind the Marvel universe right now that this show would get picked up to series. Still, it’s good news so I thought I would share it. I will be watching this NO…

Michael Giacchino Premieres Music for ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

Michael Giacchino Premieres Music for ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’
Movies on the Radio - WQRX

Giacchino has created a colorful, dramatic score for “...Into Darkness,” and he presents 22 minutes of it on this show. With Host/Producer David Garland, Giacchino discusses specifics about his score for the film, shares his thoughts about Star Trek’s enduring appeal, reveals how a fan’s Tweet inspired him to make a last minute revision to his score, and talks about his future projects and much more.

So I haven’t had time to listen to much of this, but it seems pretty good 5 minutes in. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any podcast feeds on this site or for this show (seriously guys, you…

“Somewhat Irascible and Cantankerous” - ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

“Somewhat Irascible and Cantankerous” - ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

I think “irascible and cantankerous” but “with a heart of gold” easily describes the beloved character of Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy. Of all the things I like or don’t like about J.J.‘s take on ‘Star Trek’, Bones is definitely in like category. Karl Urban seems to almost channel Deforest Kelly in the ways that matter.

This is a brief character profile video on the good doctor, and it even has just a tiny bit of stuff we haven’t yet seen from the film (that I’m aware of).

Mark Hamill Likes Jar Jar (and the prequels, ugh)

Mark Hamill Likes Jar Jar (and the prequels, ugh)
Joe Cunningham - The Playlist

On the three movies that made him famous, Hamill spoke with his tongue firmly in his cheek about ‘Return of the Jedi’ in particular. Regarding the twist at the end of the tale that Leia is actually Luke’s sister, Hamill suggested as an alternative: “Why not have Boba Fett remove his helmet, shake out some beautiful hair, and…Oh my god, it’s mom! She’s been a double agent all these years!”

Okay, that’s a little weird. I hope they don’t let him make any suggestions or additions to the cannon.

Also, man I think this part might make me gag:

...he also defended the changes that George…
