The Force Was Asleep, But Now It Awakens — ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

The Force Was Asleep, But Now It Awakens — ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’
Michael Rothman — ABC News

Star Wars: Episode VII” officially has a title.

Disney revealed the news this afternoon and the highly-anticipate movie, set for release on on December 18, 2015, will be called “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

That’s fine, I guess. I don’t know, it isn’t quite what I was hoping for. Consider the strongest two titles in the franchise, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. The Force Awakens feels a little lame next two those two titles. But hopefully the movie won’t be.

My other quibble is that the logo looks wrong somehow. Too clean. Have a look at the logo for The Empire Strikes…

Christian Bale… Bails… (I know, and I’m sorry) on Danny Boyle’s ‘Steve Jobs’ Film

Christian Bale… Bails… (I know, and I’m sorry) on Danny Boyle’s ‘Steve Jobs’ Film
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

THR reports that Christian Bale has bailed on the movie, citing “conflicting feelings” and the ultimate realization that “he was not right for the part and decided to withdraw.” While the exact nature of Bale’s concerns aren’t yet known (maybe he felt bad doing the movie after David Fincher, who first courted him for the project, departed), the actor is due on the press circuit soon for “Exodus: Gods And Kings,” so he’ll surely be asked about this matter. It should be noted that the actor was never technically signed on.

Well, that’s kind of a bummer. While I have been sort of unsure about…

Ridley Scott Producing ‘3001: The Final Odyssey’ As SyFy Miniseries

Ridley Scott Producing ‘3001: The Final Odyssey’ As SyFy Miniseries
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

THR reports that Scott will produce the miniseries “3001: The Final Odyssey,” based on Arthur C. Clarke‘s novel, for Syfy. So in other words, this is a sequel to “2001: A Space Odyssey” (well, technically it follows “2010,” but still). And in case you’re wondering, this project has the full backing of the author’s estate as well as that of Kubrick’s.

Tasked with writing the script will be Stuart Beattie, who to his credit has Michael Mann‘s “Colatteral” on his CV. But mostly, Beattie’s fimography is cluttered with stuff like “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” “G.I.…

MPAA Bans Google Glass

MPAA Bans Google Glass
Nicholas Laskin — The Playlist

Variety reports that the MPAA has, as of just a few days ago, issued a “zero-tolerance” policy, banning use of Google Glass and all other similarly designed techware for use in movie theaters across the nation. This should come as no surprise to anyone who is even remotely familiar for the potential for privacy breaches inherent in the design of something like Google Glass, and there has already been concern. Earlier this year of an Ohio moviegoer found himself talking with Homeland Security after bringing his Google Glasses to a screening of “Jack Reacher.”

Below is the official statement…

Kevin Feige Proclaims End of ‘Age of Ultron’ “Alters” ‘Avengers’ Roster

Kevin Feige Proclaims End of ‘Age of Ultron’ “Alters” ‘Avengers’ Roster
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

“The Avengers films, ideally, in the grand plan are always big, giant linchpins,” Feige said. “It’s like as it was in publishing, when each of the characters would go on their own adventures and then occasionally team up for a big, 12-issue mega-event. Then they would go back into their own comics, and be changed from whatever that event was. I envision the same thing occurring after this movie, because the [Avengers] roster is altered by the finale of this film.”

It’s an intriguing comment, particularly given what Robert Downey Jr. shared with Screen Rant about the ending of the…

The Marvel Cinematic Universe will grow even bigger than ever before with Phase 3!

At a special event held at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige took to the stage to announce the full slate for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring a mix of fan-favorite characters along with a number of heroes set to make their big screen debut in the coming years.

And while the confirmation of upcoming sequels to the successful Captain America, Thor, Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises would have been enough to send fans into a frenzy of…

Amazon Fire Stick — $19 Today (Prime), $39 Thereafter

Amazon Fire Stick — $19 Today (Prime), $39 Thereafter
Moisés Chiullan — Arthouse Cowboy

Amazon Fire TV has the baseline triumvirate needed for one of these boxes to work for me:

  1. responsive, fast internals (loads high-bitrate 1080p content in a snap)
  2. an RF remote
  3. an actually-growing, competitive “app channel” marketplace (still missing favorites like Acorn TV and Warner Archive Instant, but they’ll arrive)

Most importantly, it doesn’t stop working after an update (Apple), or suddenly decide it hates Hulu (Apple and Roku), or block content marketplaces that compete with them (like Apple does through “curation”).

If, like me, you’ve become a little disillusioned with…

Benedict Cumberbatch Rumored (heavily) to Play Dr. Strange for Marvel

Benedict Cumberbatch Rumored (heavily) to Play Dr. Strange for Marvel
Mike Fleming Jr. — Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel has finally found its Doctor Strange. I’m hearing Benedict Cumberbatch is the studio’s choice for the superhero pic, and negotiations are about to begin. The news comes after talks with Joaquin Phoenix around the time of Comic-Con went south, and Marvel went back to the drawing board. With names like Jared Leto and Tom Hardy also in the mix, this is obviously a coveted role. I expect this deal to make.

Great. Cumberbatch and Marvel! This should be amazing.

Now, just who the heck is Dr. Strange?

Marvel To Reveal More ‘Age of Ultron’ Footage During ‘Agents of Shield’

Marvel To Reveal More ‘Age of Ultron’ Footage During ‘Agents of Shield’
Russ Fischer — /Film

The trailer premiere for Avengers: Age of Ultron was originally set to take place during the October 28 episode of Agents of SHIELD. A bootleg leak of the trailer changed that, and Marvel was smart enough to respond to the leak with an official trailer release. So what does that mean for next week’s episode of SHIELD?

Despite the fact that the show’s second season is improved from the first, I saw a few jokes about millions of people deleting the episode from their DVR once the trailer leaked. Marvel doesn’t want that to happen, and will show some new Age of Ultron footage during the show…

‘The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies’ Battle is 45 Minutes Long

‘The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies’ Battle is 45 Minutes Long
Russ Fischer — /Film

Peter Jackson doesn’t shy away from the idea of making epic-length stories, and of creating conflicts within them that match the overall scope of his Middle-Earth films. The Lord of the Rings films are known for absolutely massive battles, but the final Hobbit film,The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is the only one which actually features the word “battle” in its title. Accordingly, the actual Battle of the Five Armies will be truly massive: 45 minutes long.

MAKE. IT. STOP!

I think Peter Jackson is off his meds (still). But hey, while we’re at it, we might as well split this movie…
