Beyond Star Trek Into Darkness

Beyond Star Trek Into Darkness
Joseph Dickerson - TrekMovie.com

As readers of this site know, Star Trek Into Darkness opened domestically and internationally late Spring and has earned over $443 million dollars. This is a success for Paramount, albeit a modest one. It’s not a flop, by any measure… but it’s not a home run, either. It’s a solid double or triple, but Paramount (like all studios do with summer blockbusters) was swinging for the fences. So, what’s next? Well, to quote Donald Rumsfeld, there are some “known knowns” and “known unknowns.” Let’s cover what we know, and spend some time theorizing what comes next.

Yeah, seeing how this film is…

3D Hits All Time Low with ‘Despicable Me 2’

3D Hits All Time Low with ‘Despicable Me 2’
Grady Smith - Entertainment Weekly

Blockbuster sequel Despicable Me 2 earned $143 million over the extended Fourth of July weekend — and although its debut marked a high point at the summer box office, it also marked a low point for 3-D ticket sales.

According to Universal, only 27 percent of Despicable Me 2‘s opening-weekend gross came from 3-D tickets, the lowest 3-D share in modern box office history. Notably, the record low comes just two weeks after Monsters University notched a 31 percent 3-D share on its opening weekend, which at the time was the worst 3-D performance ever. Poor 3-D ticket sales aren’t just plaguing…

Lucas Credits ‘Star Trek’ With Paving the Way

Lucas Credits ‘Star Trek’ With Paving the Way
Kevin Jagernauth - The Playlist

” ‘Star Trek’ softened up the entertainment arena so that ‘Star Wars’ could come along and stand on its shoulders,” Lucas said in an interview featured on the DVD. “There was an effective group of people in the beginning who accepted it.. that it wasn’t that far out. For the studios it was way far out, [they said] ‘What is this?’, but there was a fanbase out there—primarily the ‘Star Trek’ fanbase—who understood sci-fi, understood visual sci-fi, and was ready for something like this ‘Star Wars’ to be in the feature arena.”

And as JoBlo rightly acknowledges, it was actually the success of…

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Home Video Release Dates

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Home Video Release Dates
Matt Wright - TrekMovie.com

The dates for the U.S. home video release of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness have been announcedIt comes earlier than expected. Paramount is also trying something other studios have been toying with in the last year or so by offering an earlier release date of August 20, 2013 for the digital download version, compared to the physical disc releases that come a few weeks later on September 10 , 2013.

Awesome! I will, of course, be downloading this via iTunes the instant this becomes available! And I love that they are doing the digital release first.

Also, here’s a clip from Yahoo!…

Guillermo del Toro Films - Worst to Best

Guillermo del Toro Films - Worst to Best
Vadim Rizov - Film.com

The argument of this ranked list of Guillermo del Toro’s films is that he excels as a pop artist and falters whenever he becomes self-consciously serious. Del Toro’s work is linked by deep-geek genre immersion that makes him a skilled tinkerer with fantasy and horror tropes filtered through a color palette heavy on saturated blues and reds and loads of Catholic imagery attesting to a childhood living with an zealously pious grandmother.

This article is an interesting read, particularly as someone who has not seen any del Toro films before. But of particular note here is that 8th (worst)…

Streaming Titles — ‘The Host’ and ‘Upside Down’

Streaming Titles — ‘The Host’ and ‘Upside Down’

This is by no means a compressive list, indeed I only have two titles here for you. Someday when I have more time, or MovieByte is a bigger deal and has more writers, and I can dedicate a writer to keep an eye on new streaming titles, I’d like to do a feature every week highlighting new titles available for streaming and download. But for now, I just wanted to highlight these two titles that I noticed. If you can’t or don’t want to make it out to the cinema this week/weekend, one of these two titles might be a fun one to catch.

David Chen Compares ‘Superman’ and ‘Man of Steel’ Soundtracks

David Chen Compares ‘Superman’ and ‘Man of Steel’ Soundtracks

I have to admit that I am very partial to the score for Superman the Movie. That said, I also liked Hans Zimmer’s Man of Steel score in some ways and in parts, but on the whole I felt it quite lacking and not up to the same standard of other films that he’s scored. I mean, just listen to those themes back to back and tell me John Williams original isn’t by far the superior, I dare you!

In any event, some great analysis and comparison by David Chen of the /Filmcast. Enjoy.

Holy Blu-ray, Batman! ‘Dark Knight’ Collectors Edition on Sept 24

Holy Blu-ray, Batman! ‘Dark Knight’ Collectors Edition on Sept 24
Germain Lussier - /Film

Last week, images of this set leaked and we asked the question ”Is This The ‘Dark Knight’ Trilogy Ultimate Collectors Edition Blu-ray Box Set?” The answer turns out to be…kind of. The official set, seen above, has now been revealed and it shares many features with last week’s images along with a few treats all its own. (Which suggests either those images were an international or preliminary version of the set). The real set is scheduled for release September 24 with an MSRP of $99.97.

Alright bat-geeks, get your wallet out and be prepared to pay dearly for the [deep announcer, trailer…

Boba Fett Video from 1978

Boba Fett Video from 1978

It’s hard to imagine or remember a time when Boba Fett was not in the public consciousness, but this black and white video will help remind us. This video from 1978 is hosted by sound designer Ben Burtt, and it is basically a walkthrough of the character for the first time onscreen.

Boba Fett apparently made his first appearance in the Star Wars Holiday Special. I have never seen it, but apparently it is universally reviled. I just watched a few minutes of what I could find of it on YouTube and I can see why, it’s terrible (no really!). But apparently that was the world’s introduction to…

‘Man of Steel’ Kryptonian Tech Featurette

‘Man of Steel’ Kryptonian Tech Featurette

One of the more fascinating elements of Man of Steel was the technology used by the Kryptonians. It is, not surprisingly, unlike anything we use here on earth. Of any problems I may have had with the film, I actually like the look of the Kryptonian tech and the computers quite a bit, it was very imaginative and other-worldly, which is pretty much what you want. And it made at least a certain amount of sense.

It’s too bad there wasn’t a good movie to go along with such a great concept.
