‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Rules The Labor Day Box Office

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Rules The Labor Day Box Office
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

Labor Day weekend tends to be slow at the box office, and accordingly, no new film managed to break through to the top of the list of biggest earning films this weekend. Mostly everyone is doing something other than going to the movies, but those that did go to the theatre chose one of the biggest movies of the year.

Disney and Marvel closed off the summer on a high note, with “Guardians Of The Galaxy” returning to number one and earning the title of highest grossing film of 2014 domestically. The superhero flick took $17 million at home, and continues to make serious coin, with the…

‘Underworld’ Reboot on the Way

‘Underworld’ Reboot on the Way
Cain Rodriguez — The Playlist

Each successive Spider-Man movie has earned less at the box office than the previous entry, calling into question the theory that audiences want more of the same. Despite this, THR reports that Lakeshore Entertainment has decided to go down a similar path and reboot the “Underworld” series.

The vampires-vs-werewolves franchise is perhaps now best remembered for giving Kate Beckinsale fangs and machine guns, thereby turning her into an action star. Of course, film fans will always remember the series for spawning director Len Wiseman and unleashing him upon the world. To date, “Underworld”…

Labor Day

Labor Day

Today is Labor Day here in the U.S. I don’t have an exact official calendar of the holidays that I observe for my MovieByte posting schedule. But if I need a break or am extremely busy and a holiday comes along, sometimes I take it. Today is one such day. As you all know, the day to day operations of MovieByte are a one man show — that’s me. I have a lot on my plate and I’m going to use Labor Day to try to get caught up on some stuff.

I hope you guys have a fun day grilling, eating man food, and generally having a great day off. I’ll catch you tomorrow! And thanks for reading!

‘The Imitation Game’ Trailer

‘The Imitation Game’ Trailer

Yes, I can see the date on this video and I know it’s been out for a while. Frankly I have no idea how I missed it because it looks FANTASTIC! Obviously, for starters it stars Benedict Cumberbatch who has a range that goes from really, really good, to FREAKING AWESOME!. He looks to be tipping the scale more towards the latter in this trailer.

The film is about Alan Turing who helps crack the Enigma code during World War II. Just watch this trailer and I dare you not to come away excited for this film, which comes to theaters on November 14.

‘Star Wars VII’ Resumes Production with Harrison Ford

‘Star Wars VII’ Resumes Production with Harrison Ford
Justin Kroll — Variety

After taking a hiatus for several weeks from filming, J.J. Abrams has resumed production on “Star Wars: Episode VII” in the U.K.

The break was taken for holiday in August when many Europeans take time off, and also allowed for Harrison Ford to recover from the broken leg he suffered while filming in May. In July, Disney released a statement saying that production would pause “while adjustments to the current production schedule are made.”

Not that this is really news. Star Wars is in production. They took a break during an injury. Now they’re back. But I have to mention it because, HEY,…

‘Rosewater’ Trailer — Jon Stewart’s Directorial Debut

‘Rosewater’ Trailer — Jon Stewart’s Directorial Debut

Jon Stewart is best known for The Daily Show which is a comedy where he tends to say things that kind of make us just a little uncomfortable on the inside. The reason is because he (and a couple others) do a better job on actual reporting and analysis sometimes than “real” “news” outlets. So while on the one hand it seems sort of odd that he’s gone full political drama for his first directorial debut, perhaps on closer inspection it’s not so surprising.

I don’t always agree with Jon’s politics — at least those politics I have been able to divine amidst the humor. Though I will say that on…

Chloë Moretz Blames Piracy for ‘Kick-Ass’ Franchise Failure

Chloë Moretz Blames Piracy for ‘Kick-Ass’ Franchise Failure
Simon Reynolds and Adam Tanswell — Digital Spy

Chloë Grace Moretz has revealed that she’s leaving behind her iconic Hit-Girl role.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the actress said that she doesn’t believe Kick-Ass 3 will happen and suggested that piracy resulted in the underwhelming box office performance of last year’s sequel.

...

Kick-Ass 2 was one of the number one pirated movies of the year, but that doesn’t help us because we need box office figures. We need to prove to the distributors that we can make money from a third and a fourth movie - but because it didn’t do so well, we can’t make another one.

“If you want more than one…

‘Trash’ Trailer Starring Rooney Mara

‘Trash’ Trailer Starring Rooney Mara

Let me get the bad news out of the way: There is no U.S. release date right now for this film. It’s going to premier at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival on September 24th. But I can tell you this, I want to see this film when it becomes available. It looks really good.

It stars a couple people that you “might” recognize such as Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen. But our primary protagonists are some boys from Brazil who have never been on camera before, Rickson Teves, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein.

From what I can tell, the film appears to be a wonderful drama based on a novel…

‘Full House’ Returning to TV?

‘Full House’ Returning to TV?
Peter Sciretta — /Film

Warner Bros. television is considering a possible reboot of Full House, the popular ABC television sitcom which ran 1987 to 1995. The reboot would bring the Tanner family back to television with new episodes which would even include some of the original cast.

The news comes from TV Guide, which reports that John Stamos, who played Uncle Jesse on the show and has an ownership stake in the series, is leading the charge to make the new show happen.

Original executive producer Bob Boyett and creator Jeff Franklin (who’s writing the new version) are actively involved. Candace Cameron Bure…
