In other news, ‘Catching Fire’ topped ‘Iron Man 3’ in the 2013 box office. That’s a fairly impressive feat. And oh yes, we have ‘Star Wars’ news and rumors (it’s such a very long way to 2015, sigh). You see, Disney is appointing a committee to oversee what official fits into the ‘Star Wars’ canon, and how. Plus, rumor has it that Episode VII will focus on Luke, Han, and Leia. And finally on the news front, ‘Gravity’ is returning to theaters so if you are a bad human being and did not see it the first time, you may crawl in shame to the nearest theater. And the primary review this week is ‘Saving Mr. Banks’.

A new rumor is circulating that could explain the number of superheroes potentially showing up in Batman vs. Superman. We know for sure Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman will be in the Zack Snyder sequel, set for release July 17, 2015. We’ve also heard wild rumors of other superheroes, such as Green Lantern, Flash and Aquaman, possibly popping up in the film. Whether those rumors are true or not, the addition of Wonder Woman alone has fans worried Snyder’s film will bite off more than it can chew.

Word has just hit that Michael Douglas, fresh from his Golden Globe win for Behind the Candelabra, will be in Edgar Wright‘s Ant-Man. He’ll be the first Ant-Man, Henry “Hank” Pym. That pegs Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, who becomes Ant-Man after stealing Pym’s tech.

Marvel confirms those details. (Variety, in a story that has since been changed, said Douglas is the villain in the film, without naming his character. That’s an interesting clash of info, but likely just an error on the trade’s part.)

This morning, the members of the New York Film Critics Circle, including me, voted to expel Armond White, the former critic of the now-defunct New York Press (and currently the editor and movie critic of CityArts), from the group. Let me be clear from the outset, I enjoyed this film quite a bit. That said, I feel like I would have enjoyed it better if I actually liked Disney’s Mary Poppins. As it is I really do not like Disney’s classic film that much. While P.L. Travers’ concerns and complaints about the film may be too far reaching and come from a bit too dour of an attitude, I tend to agree with her underlying issues regarding Disney’s version of the film. Iron Man 3 had the year’s biggest opening weekend and dominated the summer box office, but when the dust eventually settles on 2013, Catching Fire will go down as the year’s biggest smash. The second film in the Hunger Games franchise, based on Suzanne Collins’ book trilogy, inched past Marvel’s superhero movie on Jan. 9 and now holds the top spot with $409.4 million.

Here’s a lesson Hollywood might want to consider: Peter Berg’s “Battleship” cost over $200 million and took $25 million on its opening weekend. By contrast, the tough adult war thriller “Lone Survivor” cost $40 million, and almost made up its budget this weekend earning $38 million and taking the number one slot.

And I must apologize, somehow I’ve missed listing this film in my What to See articles. I’m blaming the holiday befuddlement.

I’m still not entirely pleased with the fact that Jack Ryan has been changed from a CIA analyst that gets thrust into crazy situations, into secret agent that seeks them out, but whatever. We’ve got to keep the story fresh and changed up for a modern audience — or something. I guess my problem is Jack Ryan is not Jason Bourne, but someone forgot to tell the script writers and/or directory Kenneth Branagh.

Still, I hope it’s worth something. One of my problems with the previous Jack Ryan films as a franchise is they were not cohesive. Only two of the four films featured the same actor as Jack…

The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision has tried to make sense of all the new Star Wars rumors. The latest of which include thatMichael Fassbender, Girls star Adam Driver, and Hugo Weaving are now being considered for roles. Yet that isn’t all the rumors.
