Disney Launches Muppets Digital Series

Disney Launches Muppets Digital Series

Disney has launched a new Muppet series straight to the interwebz. It’s not as good as the movies or anything, but it’s kind of fun I guess. Drew Taylor over at The Playlist has a pretty skeptical view if you’re more interested in that sort of take. I tend to look at it more as embracing the internet as a distribution medium. I could be wrong, and it’s not like Muppets Most Wanted did really, really well or anything. In fact, it only made $78 million world wide on a budget of $50 million. That’s quite a bit less than the 2011 film and it’s not great at all. So it’s not too much of a stretch…

Rise of the Guardians of the Galaxy

Rise of the Guardians of the Galaxy
Angie Han — /Film

As Big Two superheroes go, the Guardians of the Galaxy are a pretty obscure bunch. So much so, even the trailers for the movie poke fun at that fact. Still, you’d think they’d be pretty well known now, what with a $100+ million budget and the power of the Marvel Studios marketing machine to back them up.

And yet, that didn’t stop a few cinemas from getting these Guardians mixed up with a different ragtag group of world-saving Guardians. According to reports, some theatergoers bought tickets to Guardians of the Galaxy last night… only to be treated to a screening of Rise of the…

‘Out of Print’ Trailer — Reflecting on 35mm Film In a Digital Age

‘Out of Print’ Trailer — Reflecting on 35mm Film In a Digital Age

If you’ve been following MovieByte and my work for any length of time, you’ll know that I’m a fan of actual film. I’m not crazy about it and I think digital can be just fine. But I also think that actual film is a great thing. This new documentary explores the revival theaters that use real 35mm projection and run older (not first run) films. It seems to be particularly focused on the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles and features some familiar folks such as Kevin Smith, Rian Johnson, Seth Green, Edgar Wright, and more.

There are many ways in which I like the digital age we live in, but…

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Blows The Box Office Away With $94 Million Domestic

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Blows The Box Office Away With $94 Million Domestic
Kevin Jagernauth — The Playlist

So, where do we start? Marvel’s “Guardians Of The Galaxy” came into the weekend with good tracking numbers, with many expecting it to come near or even modestly past the previous August weekend record holder, “The Bourne Ultimatum,” which opened to $69.3 million in 2007. But no one expected this.

‘Guardians’ took a staggering $94 million this weekend, becoming the third biggest opening of the year (behind “Transformers: Age Of Extinction” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), and it also tallied $66.4 million overseas, for a total worldwide haul of $160.4 million. Not bad for a movie…

Snow White Prequel ‘The Huntsman’ Gets 2016 Release Date

Snow White Prequel ‘The Huntsman’ Gets 2016 Release Date
Jake Perlman — Entertainment Weekly

Universal Pictures announced the release date for The Huntsman, a prequel of sorts to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman with Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron reprising their roles of the Huntsman Eric and evil queen Ravenna. The film, directed by Frank Darabont, will be released on Friday, April 22, 2016 and reveal how the two characters interacted before Snow White ever met a dwarf.

I’m just having a really hard time getting into this idea. I don’t think it works without Snow White. I liked the first film, I don’t see why we have to ruin this.

Ben Beaumont-Thomas — The Guardian

Her namesake may be able to travel across galaxies in Star Wars, but Laura Matthews from Southend – whose middle name is Skywalker – isn’t even able to get on a budget airline to the Med.

The 29-year-old added the middle name by deed poll in 2008, “for a bit of a laugh”, and recently tried to renew her passport, complete with her new name and the signature L. Skywalker. Her application was refused, with the Home Office telling her it “will not recognise a change to a name which is subject to copyright or trademark”.

Ahh, yes. That good old copyright stuff that I love so much. Do you even…

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Tracking for $65M-Plus Debut

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Tracking for $65M-Plus Debut
Pamela McClintock — The Hollywood Reporter

The Marvel and Disney tentpole will play in more than 4,080 theaters, the widest August release in history; “It’s much more of a space opera than a superhero movie,” says director James Gunn.

Gunning for one of the top August openings of all time in North America, Guardians of the Galaxy is expected to open to at least $65 million this weekend, a strong start for Marvel Studios’ new franchise.

Some believe director James Gunn‘s Guardians has a shot at approaching, or crossing, $70 million, although no one is placing any bets considering the steep downturn overall at the summer box office.…

Interview With ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Director James Gunn

Interview With ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Director James Gunn
Drew Tailer — The Playlist

How much say did you have in this movie versus how much was dictated from Marvel?
Every single line in the movie is mine. We talked early on about having Thanos in the movie, which, believe me I was excited to have Thanos in the movie because a) I love Thanos and b) I want people who have seen “The Avengers” to go see this because we’re connected to it. There was no fight from me having Thanos in the movie. But for me, I wrote a group of characters with the plot points I wanted to write and the stuff that’s connected to the rest of the Marvel universe was very exciting for me to be a part…

New ‘Interstellar’ Trailer

New ‘Interstellar’ Trailer

Well, today is trailer day for MovieByte apparently. All the stuff I keep coming across today that I feel like is interesting and worth posting are trailers. And here we have Paramount and Christopher Nolan opening up the kimono just a little bit. At Comic-Con San Diego this past weekend, Nolan made a surprise visit to Hall H at the well know convention. Despite having made the The Dark Knight trilogy — which might even be rightly accredited with supercharging the current super hero cinema — Nolan has never come to Comic-Con before. That has now changed. He showed up with the trailer you will…
